Finding Your Niche: The Power of PR

Whether you are the owner, manager, or public relations (PR) director of a company, chances are, you’re always looking for ways to get your name in the public eye. While advertising is a great start, enhancing your advertising with national PR creates a perfect marriage of exposure for your company. What is PR? Let’s let Marsha Friedman, CEO of EMSI (Event Management Services Incorporated) explain: “It’s non-paid communication to promote your company in a positive light using media vehicles like television, radio, magazines, and newspapers. Through PR you build mutually beneficial relationships between your business and the public on whom your success or failure depends.”

When it comes to PR, most people believe they can write a press release, send it to a TV station, radio station or newspaper and just wait for the avalanche of phone calls. But time goes by and after they realize there aren’t any reporters beating down their door, they make a few phone calls to the newsroom only to discover that no one even read the press release. All of that time and work goes down the drain. You’re back to square one and you start over, but to no avail. So how do you end the vicious cycle of disappointment?

Research can make or break your pitch

“Research,” says Marsha Friedman. “Plain and simple, you need to know your audience and know your media market.” And research is the key to both. So first and foremost you need to take a look at your message and ask yourself a few questions – is it newsworthy? Is it consumer-related? Does it have a local twist? Is it a visual story? What demographic am I targeting? How old is my audience and what is their target household income? The answers to these questions will help you craft your “pitch” and determine which media outlets you should target.

Friedman continues, “While most people go for the saturation effect, seeking radio, television and print media simultaneously, the reality is that your message might not be a good fit for all media. So that brings us back to the research Table. Now it’s time to do a little homework and figure out where your message stands the best chance of garnering media attention.”

How do I get on TV?

TV newscasts communicate to their audience through pictures and conversation. Producers look for newsworthy topics that are visual and entertaining or informative “how-to” segments. They want compelling conversation and pictures that will grab the viewers’ attention. They don’t want a “talking head” rattling off statistics or blatantly plugging a new product.

Worried that your message isn’t visual? Marsha Friedman offers some advice. “Try this- ask yourself how you’d explain your message to a child? Did that help you think of any pictures or simple words that fit your message? Those pictures or simple words can translate into graphics for a TV story. We once had a life insurance agency that wanted us to arrange local and national TV appearances for their CEO. The pitch we created offered interviews discussing the importance of life insurance and why it’s vital for women to protect themselves for the future. Sounds like you could sleep right through it, right? But we offered more than just the interview. We had the client prepare graphs and bullet points with short information snippets showing the mortality rate of women versus men. The TV stations turned them into graphics and voila – it became a very powerful visual story that was successful for our client and the media.”

Keep in mind too, that the morning, noon and evening newscasts are each geared towards a different audience. The early morning shows are usually watched by working adults and families getting ready for school. Notice how the news formats shift into more of a talk and lifestyle segment that’s sprinkled with news updates after 8AM when most commuters have already left for work?

Saying Your Piece on Talk Radio

Radio talk shows engage their audience through words rather than photographs. Most radio stations are turning to local angles for interviews. So it’s important to figure out if your message has a local tie-in or is important to your community.

Because radio doesn’t require visual props or photos, it’s a great fit for just about any message, so long as you can discuss your topic for a good 30 minutes. Marsha Friedman adds, “What you’re really doing is having a conversation with the listeners, so you need to be well-versed in your topic and able to handle plenty of questions. Your message should be topical too; something people want to talk about at the office water cooler or over coffee.”

Radio talk shows, which are found mostly on the AM dial, also vary from morning to night. Morning shows have shorter interviews during this “drive time” to work. Talk show hosts don’t have time for a 30 minute interview because morning shows are jam-packed with news, weather and traffic updates.

Midday shows were once known to target women, but that’s changed because so many people listen to the radio at work. Now, you’ll find many business shows air during typical daytime work hours. After work, you’ll find the second “drive time” of the day. Unlike in the morning, listeners are more relaxed. They’re on the way home from a long day at work and there’s more time to air a 30 minute interview.

During the evening, it’s a mixed audience of people listening from home. And don’t discount the reach of overnight interviews – while you may think no one is listening, think again! Overnight talk shows (from midnight to 5 a.m.) are very important due to overnight jobs that bring in listeners – 2nd and 3rd shift factory workers, public service employees and many other industries that operate all night long.

Getting Yourself in Print

Print pr includes magazines and newspapers. While they are two different vehicles, their requirements are similar to television. Friedman suggests that, “Your pitch needs to be newsworthy, entertaining, informative, and in some cases, even visual. Newspapers work on tight deadlines, so make sure you don’t wait a week after a hot story is released to offer your expertise or an interview on the topic. Magazines, on the other hand, often have a 30 to 60 day lead time. Research the publication you want to contact and make sure they have a reporter who covers your topic or message. It’s also helpful to offer quality visuals.” For example, restaurants offering a recipe, a gym offering tips to a tighter tummy, even the latest trends in jewelry, can all be accompanied by photographs to support the story.

I’ve Narrowed the Search, Now What?

Once you know the types of media you want to target, how do you know which TV stations, radio stations, or print publications are in your area? You can always subscribe to some sort of media list, but why would you do this when the internet is full of free media information? You can also use a basic search engine and search for your city + media, for example type in “New York Media.” You’ll find a whole list of media outlets at your fingertips.

Marsha Friedman adds, “Now that you’ve found a list of media contacts, you’re well on your way to creating a Power National PR campaign to drive business to your company. Now that you understand why it’s so important to find your media niche, next up in our series, we’ll focus on creating a powerful message.”

To be successful at PR, you must create your message specifically for your target audience and then find the best media vehicle to drive your message home. That’s why pushing those standard press releases didn’t work for you in the first place.

Painted Lamps

Posted by: admin    in Cheap Table Lamps

painted lamps

Making of thangka paintings

Most of the thangkas are painted on a canvas. Some are painted on paper or leather. Other are embroidered, appliquéd, woven and patchwork thangkas, but theSketching else forms are not discussed here. Technically making a painted thangka occurs in four stages.

Preparing the foundation:

The kind of thangka under discussion here, the canvas you buy, is made of a woven material: cotton, linen, and sometimes silk. A finely woven structure, made of a single piece of fabric, is best, because paint easily chips off of thicker to rougher fabrics when the thangka is rolled up. The painted canvas is rectangular in shape, taller than it is wide, ideally measuring on the average 30inches tall by 20 inches wide (75 by 50centimeters). The same 3:2 ratio f height to width can also be found in other formats: 12 by 8 inches (30by 20cm); 48 by 32 inches (120 by 80 cm); 120 by 80 inches (300 by 200 cm) for exceptionally large specimens. These proportions generally also apply to the huge thangkas – measuring up to 180 by 130 feet (55 by 40 meters) that are hung out side the wall of the monasteries during festivals. There are also elongated thangkas that are wider than they are tall, with a size ratio of 2:3.The edges of the canvas are folded over twice, rather than hemmed, to prevent them from unraveling. Then the canvas is fastened with thread to four laths that are firmly attached with twine to a wooden frame, and strung tightly, so that it looks like an upright trampoline. The front and the back of the cloth are swabbed with a sizing of anima; glue consisting of boiled bones and skins, often of a water buffalo. After this layer has been applied, it is polished with a smooth stone or shell. This produces a smooth, even layer on rough or uneven cloth that will function well for sketching and painting and will keep the paint from seeping into the cloth.

Sketching

For orientation, the painter will often first lay down a grid of coordinates in the form of eight lines: two diagonal lines with a horizontal and a vertical axis drawn through their intersection, and four lines drawn parallel to the frame. Sometimes the painter will do this on the back so that the lines show through when the canvas is held up to the light the next step is a charcoal sketch. When the painter is satisfied with the result, the lines will be accentuated with ink. There are separate drawings, of templates, available for many of the figures that are to be painted. They can be transferred to the canvas by pricking holes through them along the contours and on the most important lines and components. Powder is blown through these holes, resulting in a dotted outline on the canvas. Another technique for transferring figures uses block prints. The wood or metal blocks are painted black; the figures are colored in at later stages.

Painting

When the sketch is finished, it is time for the coloring stage. Large color area areas are often applied by brushing or writing numbers or syllables into the area in question. Black, for instant, is indicated with the number two or with the syllable Na, yellow with five or SA. When applying the colors, a particular sequence is commonly followed. First, the area furthest away in perspective, the sky, is colored. Then the closer landscape is done, followed by trees, rocks, and water. After this come the deities and other figures. The throne, clothing, and nimbus are painted first. Light colors are applied before dark colors, and then details in gold are added.

Framing

Once the painting is finished, the canvas is loosened from it’s stretchers and framed with textile edging. The silk or brocade trim is of an established width, so that the depth of the bottom trim is half the length of the painting, the top one fourth, and the sides are one-eighth of the length. Still, the framed thangka is not completely rectangular but splays out a little toward the bottom, and metal caps are usually slipped over the ends. If a thangka is not in use, but not rolled up either, a thin piece it from soot and smoky Lamps, and to avoid the image being visually touched bye uninitiated eyes. Often the curtain will be yellow silk, with red or blue dots, or sometimes it has a flower motion on it. Over this lowered curtain two bands of red silk hang down to the very bottom. At the top between these two strips hangs a lightweight read cord with which the veil can be tied up. At the very top there is a cord by which the thangka can be hung or with it can be tied together when it is rolled up.

Would Intel rule the roost in mobile space with Moorestown Platform?

Intel Corp, the world’s largest chipmaker, holds more than 80 percent market share of PC processors. The chipzilla has announced the launch of its 32nm Westmere desktop processors. Recently, the company has also launched its new Pine Trail chips especially for netbooks, which is expected to increase by 14 percent to more than $46 billion in 2010 and Intel wants to have a share in it too. Now, with its latest Moorestown Platform, the company wants to excel in mobile space too.

At present, PC vendors are moving in opposite direction, using phone chips to impress users of PCs and consumer electronics. Analysts predict that the new paradigm shift in the preferences of the consumers for such processors is emerging as a danger alarm for Intel. Hence, the chip maker is facing competition from mobile devices like phones, tablets, e-readers and scaled-down laptops that are used for accessing internet these days.

Meanwhile, mobile handsets have transformed into smartphones which, according to Google, have now become superphones. Further, large notebooks became small netbooks which are now transforming into smartbooks. To counter Intel-powered PCs, various companies that include Qualcomm, Marvell Technology and Freescale Semiconductor developing new kinds of Internet devices at CES, 2010.

Intel’s Moorestown Platform

In CES, 2010, Intel has introduced its mobile platform, called Intel’s Moorestown platform to compete chip vendors in mobile space. The new platform will bring “Intel Inside” from PCs to mobile devices. The company has dominant position in computer processor, but has not had a stake in mobile handsets. In the event, the Chipzila has introduced LG GW990 Smartphone based on the Moorestown Platform.

Moorestown platform is the successor of Intel’s Menlow processor specially designed for mobile Internet devices. The new platform integrates 45nm processor and consists of a system on a chip, called Lincroft and an I/O hub known as Langwell.

Web based mobile to reach billion mark in 2013

It is assumed that in the coming years, people will use multitude of devices for accessing internet. Further, PC will be the chief mode for people to go online, however various portable devices are chopping off PC’s dominance with Smartphones leading the charge. Leading vendors in mobile segment viz. Qualcomm, Freescale, Marvell and Texas are using chip technology developed by ARM Holdings.

According to the research firm, IDC, the number of web based mobile phones will reach 1 billion mark in 2013, but the number of internet connected PCs will rise to 1.6 billion from 754 million in the same time period.

Apple Tablet? : After the launch of Google’s Nexus One, it is reported that Apple will introduce its tablet PC by this month end. It seems that both devices will change the PC industry and pattern of the web based devices like mobile handsets, e-reader, and handheld PCs.

Marvell’s Armada chips: Santa Clara, California-based Marvell had launched its new line of chips called Armada to provide right balance of processing speed, low power consumption and touch screens adaptability, which make easier to convert Smartphones into Mobile internet devices.

Bedside Table Clocks

Explore the Charm of Country Style Bedrooms

Country style bedrooms have become very popular these days, perhaps due to their informality, simplicity and a leaning towards hand-crafted natural materials. While it can be stylish, the country bedroom should always be restful and refreshing without over doing precise co-ordination of furniture and fabrics.

Since the emphasis is on comfort and character is is easy to see that the true hallmarks of the country bedroom are a clean unfussy environment that is perfectly conducive to rest and relaxation, with practical fabrics and furnishings that have restrained but often rich colour schemes.

If you’re lucky enough to have a rustic room anyway, don’t over furnish it. Instead, allow the architecture to do the talking and let the furniture complement it rather than fight it. It is often best to choose a showpiece bed and then match it with eclectic pieces of furniture.

Warm pine furniture mixed with cream and white bedding will often give the bedroom a cosy feel, while a traditional brass bed is an important ingredient of the traditional country style and can transform the look of your bedroom. If you feel able to afford a four-poster then you’ll instantly create a bedroom that’s not only spectacular but also perfect for relaxing in at the end of a long hard day.

Try to choose Bedside Tables that match for a co-ordinated look and layer your bed with throws and cushions. Be aware that generously stuffed cushions, feather pillows and duck-down quilts ensure that comfort is high on your list of priorities. A deeply buttoned, padded headboard instantly creates a comfortable feel in your room, while padding the foot of your bed creates a look that shouts pure luxury.

Keep walls plain and simple, or go for patterned wallpapers that will still please you even when you are lying in bed with gastric flu! If you’re committing to a bold pattern, go for a motif that you really identify with, whether you choose butterflies, birds or florals. While you can mix florals and plains – take care not to overdo it in a small room.

If you want a modern country style bedroom, choosing a bold floral pattern does the trick, but in a small space, keep to smaller patterns. Where space is tight, keep walls plain and co-ordinate – even if you don’t match – your patterns elsewhere. For a room that needs to feel free and spacious, go for a light, neutral colour scheme that will play down the pattern.

On the other hand if you want a look that’s a little more whimsical then choose a mixture of patterns and colours – choosing shades from a palette of pale and punchy jewel colours. Pile on the pattern if the light is good in your room – and if it’s a decent size. However, keep the colour scheme simple, adding interest by varying the patterns’ sizes and styles.

You can make a space seem bigger by choosing wallpaper with reflective properties as these will bounce light around and make the space seem more luxurious. Probably the best approach to liven up a naturally dark room is to use a big mirror, shutters and small pieces of furniture which will all help to stretch the space.

Perhaps you feel that your bedroom lacks character and you want to upgrade it. By putting panels of wallpaper behind your headboard you will create what looks like a focal wall or, you could simply wallpaper the wall behind your bed in a feature paper. Don’t despair if you have a seemingly dull all-white theme, it is easy to update as you can easily create a country look just by changing the bed linen for something more striking.

When going for fully fitted furniture all around your room, keep the finish very light – that way it won’t dominate your space. Fitted furniture doesn’t have to mean modern and bland, you can still get a country look if you pick the right style of units – and in a small or awkward space, it will help you make the most of space.

If you want your bedroom to have much more of a sophisticated look then glass furniture, chandeliers and mirrors, along with ornate furniture are all must-buys. In addition choosing bed linen with a sheen, will give your room a feeling of luxury – and you can add panels of wallpaper with a similar finish to exaggerate the effect.

An alternative luxury look can be created by incorporating high shine floors, dark furniture, detailed wallpaper and of course posh bed linen. Bear in mind also, that a very tall headboard will give any room a sense of its own importance.

For a large bedroom that you want to look solidly rustic you can easily go for chunky wooden furniture in a light finish or, you can choose darker furniture so that the room looks much more modern. On the other hand in a less spacious room slim, delicate furniture is a better choice as it will help make your bedroom feel much bigger.

Some people feel that a wooden floor is a must-have for country look lovers. Wide, stripped pine floorboards are ideal but, if your house doesn’t already have original boards, good quality engineered wood can give you just as smart a finish. You could even use subtle paint effects, such as a stencil around the edge, to add interest and almost any type of rug will look great as well as make walking barefoot more comfortable.

While tiled flooring is not something you’d necessarily expect from a country style room, if it’s under-heated, it can be both practical and comfortable, especially if you add extra layers of comfort with rugs. Alternatively, if you are a committed comfort lover, wall-to-wall carpets in near white or neutral tones won’t detract from the authentic look, provided they aren’t too sumptuous or shaggy.

Natural light is a very important factor in a bedroom as a gloomy room can precipitate a gloomy mood so do make the most of every window which should be dressed in the height of floral prints or soft naïve fabrics. If you need privacy, or the view is far from perfect, hang simple white net or muslin curtains that can stay half closed all day long with blackout blinds that may be pulled down at night. For a room with big windows, try to enhance your space with flowing curtains and layer the windows with added blinds.

Artificial lighting is much more attractive and softer in the form of wall lights and bedside Table Lamps, with simple shades in checked, floral, striped, or plain fabrics. Victorian-style brass table and floor lamps also suit the country bedroom look.

One final word; don’t forget to add charming details such as ivory hairbrushes, cut glass jars, old perfume bottles, trinket boxes, a dainty clock, porcelain figurines, silver photo frames and flowers. Flowers really are compulsory in the country bedroom; even a simple posy of wildflowers on a dressing table completely changes the feel of a room. They should always be visible somewhere in your bedroom, whatever the season, simply because since time immemorial country folk have always kept flowers and healing herbs wherever they laid their head.

Antique Lamps – Papier Mache

Antique lamps, you would expect to be made of porcelain, glass, wood, or brass, but not paper!  But, yes, there are papier mache antique lamps.

Papier Mache is a French word, which literally means, mashed paper, or, sometimes, chewed paper.  There is a story that this interpretation originated from the 19th century London, when French workers in papier mache shops chewed paper as a preparation method.

No one knows if this is true, it’s probably one of those, “so they say” stories. Although we know it by its French name, papier mache was not produced in France until the mid 17th century. France gave us the name, due to the fact that the French were the first Europeans to make it.

But the history of papier mache goes a lot further back in time than the 17th century. We need to go back to the Chinese Han dynasty, over 2000 years ago to find the origins of this remarkable material.

China has always kept remarkably detailed records and today we know who it was that first discovered, just what could be done with those “scraps of paper!.”

Ts’ai Lun, 2,000 years ago, has been acknowledged as the inventor of paper, an invention that was to become one of the world’s most important discoveries. Ts’ai Lun was a Han government official and scholar, a scientist, who was working on further developing an earlier prototype paper. He was the first to have his efforts recorded, even though archaeological evidence shows that paper may have been made a little earlier.

With a mush made from linen, hemp and Mulberry bark, Ts’ai Lun spread it out on a bamboo mat to dry.  After drying in the sun for some time, he discovered that the resultant sheet had become as hard as wood. This is the first acknowledged discovery of papier mache.

This newly discovered material was soon put to use and the earliest evidence for its practical use was as military helmets!  The helmet shape was formed on a mould and when dried, was given several layers of a natural lacquer, produced from the resin of the Chinese Rhus tree. This produced a military style helmet which became the standard issue. It was also used to add decorative elements to amour and shields.

From its discovery in China, the technique of producing papier mache reached Japan and Persia where important examples of papier mache objects can be seen today in these countries national museums.

In time, decorated items made from papier mache began to be imported from Imperial China, along with silk and porcelain, reaching Europe in the early 17th century. By the 1660’s France began producing papier mache to be followed by England in the 1670’s.

The standard technique was layering, where strips of paper and sometimes, linen, are soaked in glue and added to a mould layer by layer

The English mid 18th century saw John Baskerville, a London fine book printer, binder and type founder who began to imitate the lacquered papier mache pieces from Japan. So successful were his results that he has left us with the name “japanning.” His assistant, Henry Clay, further invented a way to produce papier mache so strong that it was equally as durable as wood. He did this by gluing specially prepared paper under heat to form tough, heat resistant panels.

By the end of the 18th century, papier mache had become so popular that vast amounts of practical domestic wares were produced. But the real high point was the 19th century’s Victorian era. New uses were constantly made, including, bowls and tea trays, boxes, sculpture, props for the stage and even jewellery!

By about 1860 the production of papier mache had reached a peak of production, with products still being imported from China.  With the rapid development of new materials, papier mache began to loose its popular demand, although the last manufacturer did not close until 1920.

Exotic Wicker Art Furniture Brilliant as Summer Flowers

Since wicker furniture come out, it is the first choice all along of literati and celebrities who pursuing elegant taste. Apart from the main skeleton of wicker furniture made of crude rattan, the main part of furniture is made from fine rattan, that make the furniture has good permeability and the contact comfortness increased by adding the contact area.

Brief Introduction:

Wicker furniture has been around since the Egyptian Empire in 3000 B.C., and included chairs, wig boxes, and chests made of reed that was woven together. Wicker is the weaving process, not the material used. This type of furnishing was commonly used in the 16th and 17th centuries as well, but became highly popular in the Victorian period. One reason that type became so popular was the simplicity of it, and the fact that it could be woven into so many different styles and designs. People wanted durable and attractive furnishings to grace their gardens, conservatories, or expansive front yards. The lightweight and summery feel of these furnishings contributed to its popularity. There is no mention of certain types furnishings in the Bible, but some references to furniture remind us of how differently they lived then. “The tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the tabernacle, (Exodus 31:7) .

Wicker furnitures mainly include wicker Bedside Tables, wicker chairs, wicker sofas, wicker coffee tables, wicker lounge chairs and wicker cabinets. With a soft weaving surface, wicker furniture can not bear heavy things, so wicker baskets and wicker vase are familiar household wicker furnishings we have seen. Currently the rattan woven materials, manual and technical  are mainly sourced from traditional Southeast Asian region, with rich ancient NTU’S custom flavors, they are welcomed more by peoples in middle-age.

Bedroom furnishings that are graceful in style and sturdily built is available in both adult and child-size furnishings. Even prams have been part of the wicker indoor furniture history. Hardwood frames provide the base for the weaving design in all of these pieces. The woven reeds are made to the size needed for the piece being constructed; then is steamed to make it pliable, is shaped for its intended use, then allowed to cool. When cooled down, the woven part retains its shape forever, providing a place of comfort for the owner, or a decorative piece.

There are several different materials that are used to make wicker outdoor furniture and wicker indoor furniture. The largest source is an Asian climbing palm tree found in tropical rain forests called Rattan. Rattancan grow to be as long as 600 feet, but usually is no more than two inches in diameter. Cane is the stem of the larger rattan trees, and fine cane is used to make natural wicker, or for stained pieces. Reed is a term used to describe all the swamp grasses that are similar to straw. Those early American chairs that are sometimes found in antique shops, or in the possession of collectors, are made of reed. Bamboo is classified as a large tropical grass that can grow to over 100 feet at a rage of 36″ per day. Bamboo thrives in the warm areas of temperate climates.

Wicker Furniture’s Cleaning

The ease with which one can clean these pieces is another factor adding to its popularity. This material can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner to get rid of surface dirt, and brushing crevices with a new, clean paintbrush. Spills can be wiped up with a clean cloth dampened with mild detergent or Murphy’s Oil Soap in water. No need to hire someone to come out and clean. Water can ruin the finish, however, so one must be very cautious. The humidity level is important to the preservation of these pieces. Air that is too dry will make the reeds dry and brittle; while to high humidity subjects it to mold and mildew.

Wicker Furniture’s Export

In recent years the export value of imitated wicker furniture increased annually. As far as I see, the abroad market have more interests about China’s reproduced wicker furniture, Chinese reproduced wicker furniture are welcomed much by buyers from European and American, the Europeans are favorite for fashion and new trend wicker furnitures more, and Americans are seeking for antique and simple style ones.

Americans buy wicker outdoor furniture more than indoor. Its form provides very comfortable seating and convenient tables for the patio or yard during the months when it’s pleasant to entertain outdoors. White is often the preferred color for outdoors, but natural wood colors are used as well. When well taken care of, these pieces will last a very long time. When comes to wicker indoor furniture, pieces can be found for every room in the house, including the nursery. Living room chairs and couches in a variety of styles are available in this material, and dining room sets that are mostly casual in style.

Estimated by some a bold wicker art distributors, the sale season of wicker furniture has just begun, and will continue increasing significantly for the next five years. Some distributors also analysed that wicker furniture were considered as low-end furniture products for their coarse production and low levels of technology few years ago. But in recent years, as environmental and natural style become populared in market, a lot of furniturer distributors catched this great potential in the market, they all adopted new craftwork and technology to upgrade the design standards, enhance the product’s quality, so wicker furnitures become more and more welcomed in the market, and turn into a “new favorite” of the market.

How to Buy Wicker Outdoor Furniture?

Pick wicker furniture to set a decidedly romantic mood outdoors. Pay close attention to materials and weaves for wickers that are much more durable than they look.

- Work with wicker’s nature to find the best place in your garden to use it. Give it some protection from the elements by locating wicker on the porch, under the gazebo or out on the patio or deck.
- Make room for wicker’s sensual statement by creating a sitting group. Start with a love seat or two chairs and a Table, and then look for the piece de resistance: a wicker rocking chair.

- Look closely at wicker materials besides all natural wood canes. Modern vinyl and vinyl/resin wickers look remarkably like the real thing but age much more slowly.

- Inspect pieces for tightly woven caning, with no splinters or gaps and smooth surfaces overall. Check leg bottoms for taps or casters to protect them.

- Sit down to see whether the wicker fits. Lean back, rest your arms and cross your legs – if you’re comfortable, it’s yours.

- Buy wicker pieces already assembled – wicker can be difficult to work with. Joints that are pieced together will tend toward instability no matter how skilled you are at assembly.

- Calculate delivery prices and logistics before buying. Include a set of furniture covers in that budget and buy them to fit your wicker for sure winter protection.

Designing your own Custom Made Baskets

Many of us have storage units which are crying out for a set of wicker baskets to keep toys, magazines, etc. tidy. When we can’t find baskets of the right size in the shops the logical next step is to have them made by a basket maker to fit exactly. If you are looking to do that, then here are some tips on how to design your perfect wicker baskets.

1Measure the space accurately. Sounds obvious, but many mistakes are made in the measuring. You will need to give the width, depth and height of the space available.

2Make sure you tell your basket maker that the measurements you have given are for the space available. They will then reduce those sizes appropriately so that the baskets fit comfortably.

3Let them know whether the baskets are sitting side-by-side on the shelf, or if they have their own space.

4Working Baskets. Willow is available in different forms. With the bark on it is known as green or brown. Green or brown can be boiled for a couple of hours to create ‘steamed’ willow, which is a very dark brown colour, almost black. These types of willow have lovely textures and give colour to baskets, but they are not as strong as willow that is boiled and stripped of its’ bark. This is know as ‘buff’ willow, and is the willow used for picnic hampers, for example. If your baskets are going to be working baskets, then make sure they are made primarily from the stripped willow. Green, brown or steamed willow can be combined with the buff to give colour, but is best not used entirely for the basket, as when it dries, the rods will shrink more than buff willow and therefore can become loose.

5Baskets for decoration only. When your basket is purely for decoration, then using stripped, buff willow becomes less important. Here you are entirely concerned with the overall look of your basket.

6Weaving. There are many styles of weave. Some will give you a chunky, rustic feel to the basket and some will give a more elegant, fine finish to your baskets. Decide which style will look best in your environment and discuss the options with your basket maker.

7Space available. If you are filling a relatively small space, narrow perhaps, then you will want to optimise the internal space of the basket, by opting for what is known as a track border. Standard borders can be up to 2cm wide and therefore reduce the actual size of the basket where your external space is restricted. Track borders also give the baskets a finer look than standard borders.

8 Finger Holes/ Handles? Do you need finger holes or handles on your basket? If your baskets are fitting snugly in a unit then you will need some kind of handle or finger hole so that you can get the basket out of its’ space. Also if the basket is relatively large and is going to be carrying heavy weights you will need handles or finger holes to help you carry the basket. On small baskets where access is not restricted, you probably don’t need anything, as you can just pull out the basket using the top border and hold it underneath. Talk to your basket maker as to what type of handle is most appropriate for your basket.

9Basket Craftsmanship. Every basket you see has been made by someone. Basket making is not something that can be done by a machine, so quality can vary considerably. Quality of willow and quality of craftsmanship, so check out both thoroughly before choosing your basket maker.

Which places we can Get Wicker Furnitures from?

Not every furniture store carries this furniture, but many do. If a customer is unable to find one nearby, there are a large number of companies on the Internet(http://www.made-in-china.com/products-search/hot-china-products/Wicker_Basket.html) through which one can order whatever wicker outdoor furniture or wicker indoor furniture, and the prices are, for the most part, quite reasonable. They are listed in categories so that finding a particular piece is relatively simple. It may take a little time, but the end result will most likely be well worth the effort.
