Set a Formal Table the Easy Way
Hosting a dinner party can be intimidating enough, but for many the idea of setting a formal table can be too big a fear to conquer. Do not let the unknown of setting a formal table scare you, a beautifully set table is a fantastic canvas on which to serve your meal. Before you begin setting your individual place settings, make sure that you will have enough space to comfortably seat all of your guests. Your table should provide enough room to evenly space out all of you dinnerware, stemware, and flatware.
After you have draped your table top in a linen tablecloth, begin by setting out the dinner plates. Starting with the dinnerware will allow you to make sure each guests will have plenty of room while at the table. Ensure everyone will have ample elbow room by leaving approximately two feet on each side of the dinner plate before placing the next. Once you plates are set, you can set your cups and glasses (which always go to the right side of the plate) and your butter and salad plates (which always go to the left side).
The next step in setting your formal table settings is the flatware. Always place silverware in the order it will be used starting from the outside in. In order to avoid guests’ confusion, only place what will be used on the table. Forks are always placed to the left of the plate and knives and spoons to the right. When setting out the knives, remember that their cutting edges of the knives should always face in. If you are serving a course that will require a cocktail fork, this is placed to the very outside right of the plate.
Traditionally, napkins are placed to the very left of the forks. Although this is the most traditional way to set the napkins, how you place them can be completely determined by the style of your table and/or occasion. A more modern way is to set the napkins directly in the center of the dinner plate (on top).
When placing stemware on the table, note that there is a traditional way in which the glasses should be placed. Always think smallest to largest (like tallest in the back) when setting the glasses. Wine glasses should always be placed above into knives in a straight line, then slanting down and in with the tallest in the back. For example your setting might include a tall water goblet in the back, a wine glass next, then a dessert wine glass in the front. Again, only place out what you will be serving to avoid confusion and provide more space. Coffee cups are placed to the right or brought out after the meal has ended.
Many hostesses are overwhelmed when setting a formal dinner table, however just remember to try and make it as clear as possible for your guests. If they feel comfortable at your table, you will as well. With a properly set table that functions without confusion, everyone can focus on the meal being presented and the great company that surrounds it.

Sconce Wall Lighting

Wall Sconces – A Descriptive Guide
Home lighting is an important part of interior décor and one can use different forms of lighting fixtures for that purpose, such as fluorescent lights, incandescent lights, emergency lights, can lights and wall sconces.
Wall sconces are an excellent way to add life to the boring walls of your home. Wall sconces are lighting that are usually mounted above the eye level on a wall to provide either directional or indirect lighting on or beside a wall in your home.
* Wall sconces are also used to light areas like a shelf, end Table, desk, etc.
* They can also be used to accent a wall or possibly a picture hanging on the wall.
* It can be used to create a focal point around an artwork or a fireplace.
* You can also light up the darker side of your room with wall sconces.
* They are a great accent lighting option for any room in the home.
Where to put up wall sconces?
Wall sconces are for every corner of your home, from bedroom to bathroom, hallways to living room. They are of great help whether you are doing stylist improvements or just doing remodeling of your home. In the following section we will tell you the right places to put up the wall sconces.
Your bathroom needs adequate lighting and wall sconces can add more light to the fixtures like wall mirror. Halogen lights give superior lighting so they are preferred but they cost you much on electricity bill so its totally your choice.
You can add an extra touch to the dining area with wall sconces. Other lighting fixtures in the dining table form shadows in the outer edges. Wall sconces offer the correct amount of understated light to walls in your dining room. They make the entire room appear cozy instead of dark and dingy on the edges.
Single bulb/ Multiple bulb
Single bulb wall sconces are preferred in bedroom, small living room or dining room. They create a cozy reading spot alongside your chair and provide that much of light required. You can put up a single bulb wall sconce in your bedroom on either side of bed. That would make the side table free and add soft convenient lighting. Multi bulb wall sconces are more suited to larger areas like hallways or drawing room, which need more lighting. Hallways are the perfect place for two bulb wall sconces placed at each two feet giving dim light with added sophistication and interest.

Antique Lamps Toronto

Hello From Caledon, Elora
October 9, 2005
Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons in Ontario, and after last weeks early fall colour tour through the Kawarthas east of Toronto, it was time yesterday to check out the areas west of Toronto. My husband and I set off on the highway, left the 401 at Mississauga Road and drove north into rolling agricultural farmland. Our first interesting village along the way was Glen Williams, a little hamlet outside of Georgetown, whose former sawmill now houses more than 30 artists and artisans. We headed north along the scenic Credit River and drove up onto the Niagara Escarpment and literally stumbled over the Cheltenham Brickworks, a now abandoned brickmaking factory dating back to 1930 that utilized the area’s clay soil to manufacture bricks for Toronto’s housing boom. Abandoned industrial buildings always hold a strange fascination for me, and they offer great opportunities for curious photographers.
Not far away is another very unique area, the Cheltenham Badlands, a unique geological formation of weathered terra cotta hued rock, that originated as a result of deforestation and overgrazing during the early 1900s. It’s a fascinating landscape of undulating hills of red clay with greenish stripes, due to the soil’s red and gray iron oxide content.
The 800-kilometre-long Bruce Trail that goes all the way from Niagara Falls to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula snakes through this region, and there are several entry points close by. The Niagara Escarpment is a truly unique habitat and home to 300 bird species, 53 mammals, 36 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish and 100 varieties of special interest flora including 37 types of wild orchids. UNESCO named Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment a World Biosphere Reserve in 1990. It’s a popular spot among hikers and naturalists.
We headed east and down the Niagara Escarpment again and drove north in its shadow to the Forks of the Credit area and the quaint little village of Belfountain. This popular excursion destination was founded in the 1820 by Scottish and Irish immigrants, many of whom worked in local quarries, railroads, mills and tanneries. Today the village has souvenir shops, a beautiful country store, a spa, and an ice cream parlour.
From Belfountain we drove westwards through the town of Erin into Wellington County, an area of fertile farmland, punctuated by rivers, gorges, small lakes, and golf courses. Our next stop on this country drive was the little town of Fergus, a town known for its Scottish Heritage which Fergus celebrates every year, usually during the second week of August, with the Fergus Scottish Festival. During this three-day event, visitors from all over the world enjoy all aspects of traditional Highland Games with a wee bit of modern flare tossed in.
Fergus has a number of historic buildings in the downtown area, and a major draw in this little town is the Fergus Market, housed in the historic Beatty Brothers Farm Implement Manufacturing building which overlooks the Beatty Dam and dates back to the 1830s. The foundry was the first industrial location in Fergus and today houses a diverse collection of merchants, food retailers, and artisans.
Just outside Fergus is the Wellington County Museum and Archives. The museum stands majestically overlooking the once mill-laden Grand River. Built of locally quarried limestone in 1877 as the House of Industry and Refuge, this landmark structure then provided shelter for the “deserving poor”, the aged and the homeless for almost a century. The museum now gives visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural legacy left by the intrepid settlers to this vast county of rolling hills, stony fields, deep gorges and quaint villages.
Another few kilometres down the road is the country town of Elora, one of Ontario’s favourite weekend excursion destinations. Elora is situated in a beautiful nature area with glacial rock formations, and its most stunning geological feature is the Elora River which plunges over a number of rapids into the spectacular Elora Gorge. The mill sitting at the top of the gorge, aptly called the Elora Mill, has been turned into an upscale fine dining restaurant and country inn with 32 guest rooms.
The Elora Gorge features several kilometres of 80-foot cliffs, caverns, rapids and quiet pools. During the summer, hiking along the cliffs and inner-tubing through the gorge are favourite pastimes. Hiking trails start right at the Elora Mill. During the winter months visitors indulge in cross-country skiing and scenic nature walks through the area. The Grand River also provides excellent opportunities for fly-fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
The Elora-Cataract trail crosses 47 kilometres of scenic countryside. Between Fergus and Elora the trail passes by the Elora Quarry Conservation Area, an abandoned quarry that is a favourite spot for a refreshing dip. The quiet farmland around Elora is perfect for long country bike rides, and numerous golf courses round out the activities on offer.
During our visit yesterday, Elora was nicely dressed up for Halloween – a variety of ghouls, ghosts, spiders, monsters and witches adorned the buildings, balconies and lamp posts along the town’s main streets. The town also offers a variety of shops, antique stories, galleries and diverse dining establishments. Horse-drawn coach rides throughout town are also a popular activity for tourists.
Not far from Elora you can visit Ontario’s last remaining covered bridge in Montrose, and you’ll have a chance to explore Old Order Mennonite Country. Summer brings a variety of festivals to this area, including the Elora Festival which is a one-month musical showcase of internationally acclaimed musicians and singers.
About 15 minutes south of Elora is the major city of this area: Guelph is a university and manufacturing city with a population of more than 100,000. Its diverse economy also includes high technology enterprises and today Guelph is one of the fastest growing economic regions in all of Canada. Similar to Fergus and Elora, Guelph was founded by Scottish settlers in the 1820s at the junction of the Eramosa and Speed Rivers. The University of Guelph Department of Scottish Studies links academic research to the community of those with Scottish ancestry. The city features many trails for hiking, biking, skiing and horseback riding and a variety of riverside dining establishments.
Guelph’s most stunning architectural feature is the impressive Church of Our Lady Immaculate, a Gothic-Revival structure begun in 1877 and completed in 1888. The twin towers, more than 200 feet high, were not completed until 1926. The Church of Our Lady Immaculate is one of Ontario’s largest and most impressive churches.
This time we didn’t have a chance to explore Guelph in detail as it was getting late afternoon and we had to head back. But there will be another time for exploring this beautiful, historic city and other surrounding communities. But our little excursion out of the city was a perfect Saturday getaway for exploring the history and countryside just outside of Toronto.

Bedside Table Cabinet

Bedroom Furniture – How to Get the Right Look
When you have been hard at work all day the sight of your bed is definitely a welcoming one; being able to walk into your bedroom and place everything away quickly and efficiently is something that should be a given, however without the right bedroom furniture this can quickly become a chore. A crowded bedroom with clothes strewn everywhere is the antithesis of relaxing, & a lack of bedroom storage can add precious minutes to every day as you try (and fail) to find the things you are looking for.
Items such as bedroom wardrobes, chest of drawers and bedside cabinets are all key to ensuring your bedroom turns out exactly how you want it to, and then of course there’s your bed. Out of all the furniture in your bedroom, the bed is definitely one of the most important features. It provides you with the space you sleep in and in many cases the place where you unwind and read a book or watch TV. With this in mind it is the item in your room that creates the atmosphere of the room, it is the item that the rest of the room is focused around. So it should be comfortable, good quality and stylish. But the best mattress you can afford, it will affect both the quality & quantity of your sleep.
The bed is the aspect of the room that sets the tone for much of the remaining furniture, it is important that all of the pieces match or complement the bed when it comes to the finish and colour used – often the bed & the bedroom furniture are bought separately, & a bed in, say, dark brown leather can be beautifully complemented by bedroom furniture in Wenge (a dark oak). Moving away from the need to exactly match bed & bedroom furniture provides the freedom to focus more on design & functionality rather than buying furniture because it matches.
A lot of the beds that are available are made in Italy, in modern designs, and with this in mind they are often slightly lower down than those that are more traditional, so this is something that you need to keep in mind when it comes to your bedside cabinets. When you are choosing the bedside cabinet that you want to place next to your bed, make sure you consider the height, it needs to be tall enough so that when you are in bed you can reach your alarm clock and lamp etc. Fortunately most of the bedside cabinets from Italy are made in a number of different finishes & heights, allowing you to choose from a staggering range of colours & sizes, so there is no need to have bedside cabinets that don’t match, or are the wrong height.
One of the most popular styles available is a contemporary style. This involves modern designs and sleek finishes, including fabrics, leather, & matt or gloss lacquers, as well as the usual wood finishes. A lot of the beds in this collection are platform beds that are close to the floor and to accompany this ever growing style there are a number of Bedside Tables available that are low enough to work, but still include the storage aspect of drawers. Many of the very low single drawer units are extra wide to compensate, some up to a metre wide, which provides a distinctive European look, but requires a large amount of floor space.
More and more of us are opting for the contemporary style when it comes to how we furnish our bedrooms and with this in mind there is one style that stands out more than any others in this collection, this is the lacquer finish. Modern contemporary furniture that has a finish of lacquer is stylish and gives you the option of having your furniture in either a matt or gloss finish, & has the huge advantage of being available in a multitude of colours, allowing you to create a cohesive look based on a palette of colours rather than relying solely on soft furnishings to provide accents. If your bed is white, but your curtains are a mix of blue, grey & white the bedroom furniture could be finished in a lighter grey to pull the whole bedroom together as a ‘look’. Most of the higher quality Italian bedroom furniture companies also make bedroom wardrobes, so co-ordinating is both easy & fun.
An added advantage of ordering a matching bedroom wardrobe from an Italian furniture supplier is the large number of available options for an Italian made bedroom wardrobe. Sitting somewhere in between a fully fitted wardrobe & a stand alone fixed design wardrobe these can be customised with handy internal options like internal chests of drawers, sliding shoe racks & trouser rails, internal lights & more. These wardrobes can be ordered in anything from a basic 2 door model to a huge composition covering an entire wall. Doors can be sliding or hinged, & can be a mix of mirrored, wood, glass or lacquer.
Creating the right mood and look when it comes to your bedroom is easy to achieve when you take advantage of contemporary furniture pieces. So make sure you keep this in mind when you are buying your bedroom furniture and you are sure to create the bedroom of your dreams.
The bedroom furniture mentioned in this article can be seen at Go Modern, & for white bedroom furniture at The White Home.

Touch Lamp

Getting The Best Glass Lamp Shade
While a lot of people know that there are various types of lamp shades out there such as the baby lamp shade, the round lamp shade, and the square lamp shade among many others, not many people are aware of the glass lamp shade. The thing is, the glass lamp shade is something rarely seen in homes except for when it is used as a Touch Lamp or a Tiffany Lamp. But there are many other kinds of glass lamp shades that can be found if you do enough looking.
Of course, if you have a lot of animals or children running around your house which might disturb or break the glass lamp shade, you might be better off going with something different. If you do not have to worry about it’s safety then a glass lamp shade is the perfect addition to any room in order to bring a bit of class into the already lovely dcor. The glass lamp shade can be found in a variety of colors, shapes, and even textures and this is wonderful because the more options you have, the better chances are of you finding the perfect match for your room.
Where to Make Your Purchases
With the craze of online shopping it is no wonder that more and more people are turning to the Internet to find their items. But when it comes to something like a glass lamp shade you may want to rethink the online store shopping because of how breakable they are. A simple bump in the mail truck can send your glass lamp shade into pieces if it was not packaged properly.
Generally, you should only purchase a glass lamp shade through the mail if you really know the company and trust that they package everything perfectly. Also, make sure that they can offer you a refund if your glass lamp shade does arrive in pieces. If you do not want to face the hassles and trouble that can come along with buying a glass lamp shade through the mail, then purchasing it directly from a regular store is your best bet.
Either case, you will need to be prepared to pay a little bit more then you would on a regular lamp shade. If you are on a tight budget, you could always consider shopping around at flea markets, yard sales, and thrift stores. There is always a good chance that you could find a used glass lamp shade in almost perfect condition in places like these.

Pendant Lamps

The Perfect Places For Pendant Lighting
Pendant lighting is one of the most versatile lighting types around. What is pendant lighting? Well, Pendant Lights are hanging lights. Usually, pendant lighting is hung by either a rod or a chain. Sometimes, you can even use several of them at once to create an interesting effect. How do you decide what the perfect places for pendant lighting are, though? Let’s find out.
Things to think about before hanging pendant lighting:
First of all, pendant lighting is best over seating areas or work areas, so you need to keep that in mind. Also, though, you could use pendant lighting to accent sculptures or artwork.
Pendant lighting in the kitchen:
Pendant lighting is great for kitchens. You might not have thought about decorating your kitchen with pendant lighting before. You might think that the kitchen space is meant to be useful, not pretty. Really, though, pendant lighting can be very useful, while still adding some style to your kitchen.
For example, you could use pendant lighting over a kitchen island. That will keep your work space well lit. It’ll also make your island stand out as a highlighted feature of the kitchen, though. The same is true if you happen to have a bar or a kitchen Table that seems too dark. Pendant lighting can really brighten things up.
Pendant lighting as a separation feature:
If you have a large, open space and want to separate it into two separate areas, you could also use pendant lighting. Pendant lighting could be great for separating your living space from your dining space, for example, if you don’t happen to have a wall between the two.
Pendant lighting in your work space:
Another problem that pendant lighting could help you solve is not having enough light in your office area. There’s nothing worse than trying to fill out paperwork at your desk and not being able to see. Since pendant lighting hangs from the ceiling, it can really brighten things up. In fact, it usually works much better than a regular lamp.
Pendant lighting in the bedroom:
Another great place for pendant lighting is in your bedroom. It can add a bit of romance to the room. You could also use pendant lighting to highlight the bed or a chair or even to accent the headboard. You could even use multiple pendant lights together to create a totally different look with your pendant lighting in the bedroom. It’s a great way of expressing yourself.
Pendant lighting and dimmer switches:
Pendant lighting has a lot of uses, but you can also combine it with dimmer switches for even more functions. What if your family was trying to watch a movie in the dark in the living room and you needed to do some work at your desk across the room? You could just dim the pendant lighting and let them enjoy the show while you work.
So, as you can see, pendant lighting can be very helpful around the house. What are the perfect places for pendant lighting, though? Well, that all depends on your house and what you want to do. You be the judge.

Table Lamps Small

Table Lamps – Japanese Tokkuri or Saké Bottle Lamps
Saké is a traditional Japanese liquor made from rice and water. It is produced from a fermentation and filtration process. Known in the west as “Saké” but in Japan as “Nihonshu”, Saké is a general term for alcohol.
The fermented Saké is initially a milky colour but is filtered by pressing through a mesh to produce a clear liquid. The Japanese production of Saké is an ancient tradition with evidence as far back as the 3rd century B.C. As with so many Japanese traditional practices, Saké has its own specialised ceramics. The central shape being the Tokkuri or
Saké bottle
These containers were developed into a ceramic art form and many were produced by small family potteries. The majority were produced as earthenware specifically known to the Japanese as “stone textured”. Very often the brewer ordered the Tokkuri from the potter, who then wrote the name of the brewer in Japanese characters or in flowing script as shown by our examples.
As today, when the customer returned the empty Tokkuri to the brewer, he received a rebate on the refill! The Tokkuri were constantly recycled and used for oil, lamp oil, vinegar and for a wide range of domestic uses. In keeping with this tradition, The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co have recycled the Tokkuri now seen on their site as table lamps, robust and full of character.
Saké is normally consumed cold in the summer and warm in the winter. Warming is today achieved by standing the now small porcelain Tokkuri in a container of hot water. In earlier times the stone textured Tokkuri were also warmed in hot water but were commonly suspended over a low coal fire to heat the Saké. The Japanese block print illustrated, circa 1820, shows this traditional method.
In the vast Japanese literary tradition, the Haiku or 16 syllable poem is found “in praise of the Tokkuri.

The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co currently have 3 tokkuri table lamps. Two are stone textured in the traditional “Rosuku” shape and one rather elegant smaller version of monochrome glazed earthenware. White Table Lamp

Antique Lamps in White Parian
Parian – marble-like in appearance, with its ever fresh, white, rather sculptured style, takes it’s name from a resemblance to the fine, pure white marble of neoclassic sculpture and was first known as “statuary porcelain”.
In the 18th century, the French were the first to produce stunning, pure white, unglazed porcelain figures at the famous Sevres factory not far from Paris. Josiah Wedgwood with his long experimentation with jasper-ware, then named it “Carrara,” after the Italian quarry patronized by Michelangelo.
Parian became popular and was soon produced by other English and American mid 19th century manufacturers. The official catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851 gives Thomas Battam credit for inventing Parian, saying ”he succeeded in producing a very perfect imitation of marble, both in surface and in tint”. While Battam may have invented it, several English factories claimed credit for its development.
But the Staffordshire firm operated by William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett was the first to produce and sell it in 1842, and went on to become one of its major productions. However it was Minton, in the mid 19th century, who finally coined the word “Parian” after Paros, the Greek island that furnished much of the pure, white marble used in the classical period and so it quickly became the accepted name. Parian figures were produced by being cast moulded, i.e., liquid porcelain, known as slip, was poured into a cast. After drying, the model was removed from the cast and finished by hand, prior to the firing. Technically speaking, Parian is an unglazed, or, biscuit porcelain.
The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co, currently have listed, two antique parian figures as Table Lamps -
A very sweet, mid 19th century, English, Parian-ware figure, emblematic of summer, mounted as a table lamp. A charming subject of a young girl caught in the action of skipping bare footed across a summer meadow, her long skirt billowing out behind her. She holds the corner of her short jacket, filled with summer flowers, in one hand and in her upright hand, a small bunch of grapes. This pretty figure on a turned, drum shaped stand inset with a circlet of flowers, the stand water gilded.
Circa 1860 Overall height (including shade) 24″/61cm
A charming, mid 19th century, English, Parian-ware figure, emblematic of summer, mounted as a table lamp. A lovely subject of a young boy reaper,a sheaf of wheat under his arm and holding a reaping hook. He rests gracefully on a tree stump, his jacket lying over a rush woven bee skeep. The model producing all the languid emotion of a hot summer’s day.
