Fashion and decorating trends come and go. There are some trends that we’re really happy to see go. and as far as I am concerned. the lava lamp is one of them. But now. that famous sixties trend has now reappeared on the scene.

When I was a kid. a lot of my friends had lava lamps. At that time. I thought they were just the coolest item to own. My older sister had lava lamps in her apartment so I thought it was a really mature thing to have. I begged my parents for one. first for my birthday and then for Christmas. but I never got one. My mother was way too practical; the reason I could not have one was because there was no extra outlet in my room. I was willling to give up my regular lamp. but that idea didn’t fly. Neither did the idea that we could put the lava lamps all over the house. My ill-informed mother thought they were ugly.

I had to live by my parents decision. but the appeal of a lava lamp was all consuming. I finally saved enough money of my own from babysitting and dragged a girlfriend to go shopping with me for one. I found a store with a lava lamp on a clearance rack and became the proud owner of one. I figured I could keep it in the closet and it would add an interesting glow to my room. but my mother would not know about it. Since I did not have another outlet. I had to drag an extension cord and plug it into another outlet. I was thrilled with excitement as I put the lava lamp in the closet. using the box it came in as a Table. I turned it on. and it was one of the ugliest colors I have ever seen. Maybe that is why it was on the clearance rack? Still. watching the brownish orange blobs float around inside the glass was a thrill. Just them. I was called down to dinner. and while we were eating. wer heard a load crash and then the cat came flying downstairs with a strange looking tail. She was so scared she fled beneath the sofa and wouldn’t come out. Of course. the crash was my precious lava lamp hitting the floor when the cat stepped through the extension cord. It didn’t take long for my mother to figure out what the strange liquid on the floor of my bedroom was. A terse “Clean it up” said it all. Well. a lava lamp does not have lava in it. but it sure has some strange liquid in it. It was very greasy and smelly and every time I tried to pick up the blobs. they escaped through my fingers. Two hours later the result was passable. but I could not sleep in my room due to the putrid odor. I had to ‘fess up to my mom. who said she was very dissapointed in me. Honestly. I was a good kid. and my mom had never said that to me before.

Today when I see a lava lamp I cannot understand what the appeal of that ugly thing was. especially since it caused me so much trouble and only led me to the sadness of my mom’s disappointment.

Use a nest of tables when space is at a premium, particularly when talking about the environment present in a studio apartment or whenever there’s a need — such as during special occasions — for more tables. Some commentators believe that Idol ratings are high, because people like watching train wrecks. In the same way that traffic jams are caused by drivers “rubber necking” to see a traffic accident, many people believe that American Idol’s charm is the fact that viewers can see hopeful performers get sliced and diced by Simon Cowell and the other American Idol judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

However, if that were the case, American Idol ratings would be strong out of the gate and then slowly taper off until the final performances are done. But, it does not work that way. The American Dream – Millions of people want to be rich and famous. When they look on their television screens and see people following their dreams of success in the music industry, they are energized to cheer for the contestants.

The Personal Drama – Viewers are taken into the lives of the contestants. This enables the viewer to form personal attachments with the individual performers and to root for the people they would like to win the show.

Viewer Participation – Simon, Paula and Randy are not left in charge of the hen house. Instead, American Idol allows their viewers to participate in the selection process.

Randy Jackson was quoted, “The judges are continually surprised at how people who should know they can’t sing show up thinking they have a chance.”

The audience is often surprised too.

But, the audiences loved William Hung. He did not know how to sing and he knew it, but he enjoyed singing even if he did not have the talent. Hung was the only exception to the golden rule about talent. Hung got a recording deal and his CD sold 295,000 copies, outselling a dozen of the other Idol contestants who have gotten recording deals.

Self-Confidence Is A Requisite… Or Is It?

Many critics suggest that a contestant in American Idol should bring confidence to the competition if they want to win. But, the truth is that American Idol is as much about the making of a star as it is about locating the talent.

Standing in front of an audience of 36 million viewers and three brash judges does take some self-confidence, but confidence will not make an untalented contestant a better performer.

The Life of Loius Comfort Tiffany and Collecting Genuine Tiffany Lamps

Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist who lived from 1848 to 1933. He became well known for his work on stained glass which he used in many different settings including windows, enamels, metalwork, lamps and jewelry. He is usually associated with the Aesthetic and Art Noveau movement and was also a member of the prestigious Associated Artists along with other well known artists of the time including Samuel Colman, Lockwood De Forest and Candace Wheeler.

The Tiffany Company was founded by his father Charles Lewis Tiffany. Louis was initially interested in becoming a painter but developed an interest in glassmaking around 1875 and learned the techniques by working in glass making factories until 1878. In 1885 he founded the Tiffany Glass Company which became known as Tiffany Studios in 1902.

His first experiments with glassmaking used cheap jelly jars and bottles which contained impurities that he used to make unique designs. He tried to persuade fine glass makers to leave in the impurities so that he could produce his unique designs but he failed to persuade the, Instead he founded his own glassmaking company where he could produce glass to his own specifications. Previously, stained glass was made by painting on clear glass but he used opalescent glass in various colours and textures to make his own original designs.

In 1983 he founded the Stourbridge Glass Company and built his new factory to produce his stained glass. In 1893 he produced his first stained glass designs and exhibited lamps for the first time at the Chicago venue of the World’s Fair that year.

In 1894 he trademarked the term Favrile, a word form the French meaning handmade which he applied to all his enamel, glass and pottery products. From 1895 his company produced stained glass, lamps and other interior decorations.

Today a comprehensive collection of Tiffany’s work is housed in Florida at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. Included are examples of Tiffany lead glass windows. lamps, paintings, pottery, jewelry and more. The interior of a chapel, designed for the World’s Columbian Exposition which was held in Chicago in 1893, can also be seen there. Glass panels originally placed in the home of Louis, Laurelton Hall, are also exhibited at the museum.

The company founded by his father, the Tiffany Company, also sold his produced and in 1902, after the death of his father, he became the Artistic Director. His company Tiffany Studios ceased business in 1932.

Collecting Genuine Tiffany Lamps

One of the most popular collectible items produced by Tiffany Studios are Stained Glass Lamps. They are beautiful examples of his work and genuine Tiffany lamps sell for a great deal of money nowadays. Tiffany began producing lamps in the 1980′s and they were very popular until about 1920 when they went out of favor with the wealthier classes who considered them old fashioned. In the 1960′s they came back into favor as Art Noveau movement increased in popularity. Christie’s sold a genuine Tiffany Lamp in 1997 for $2.8 million!

A genuine Tiffany lamp will sell for anywhere between $10,000 and hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on both the quality and the size. A Tiffany apple blossom lamp was sold for $136,000 and dragonfly lamp for $185,000.

Popular Tiffany lamps include the dragonfly, wisteria and peony designs which all sell for over a hundred thousand dollars. Lamps with other designs, geometric patters and flowers and vines are less popular but still command a hefty price at auction. There are, of course, many fakes as a signature is easily copied. To ensure you only buy a genuine Tiffany lamp always buy from a reputable auction establishment.
