Home Lamps: Choosing Type, Location, and Style
Home lamps can be a great way to accessorize your home and provide lighting at the same time. The physical appearance of the lamp, the type of light the lamp casts, and where the light is cast, all contribute in creating the room’s ambiance. There are many different types of lamps for the home, such as: Table Lamps, Bedside Table Lamps, Buffet Table Lamps, Desk Lamps, Floor Lamps, and Accent Lamps. Regardless of the type, when choosing a lamp, keep in mind location, style, and type of lighting needed.
If the room has table surfaces that are sufficiently large, the Table Lamp may be the best choice. Of course, the lamp should not block a view – so coffee tables are typically not the best surface choice. In areas where the horizontal surfaces are narrow such as a buffet table, then the smaller buffet table lamps are usually the best. A narrow and tall lamp such as a candlestick lamp, works well on a narrow surfaces.
Unless a bedroom is rather large or has a high ceiling, a smaller Bedside Table Lamp may be better suited to the scale of the room. If table space is limited, a floor lamp may be most appropriate. LEDs, although still expensive at this time, do work well for some types of Accent Lamps.
Whether choosing a table lamp, Desk Lamp, or other type of home lamp, the location, style, and lighting type play an important role in creating the entire ambiance of a room. If well-orchestrated, the overall quality of an entire room can be greatly enhanced with these concerns in mind.

The Only Way To Refit Rawhide Lamp Shades Properly
Are we communicating? That might be the question that comes to mind when ordering western rawhide lamp shades or replacement lamp shades. It can be totally exasperating because various people size lampshades quite differently.
The whole matter is complicated by telephone conversations and world wide web ordering. If you understand how you can best measure a shade to get the proper fit and also communicate the correct size, you’re going to prevent problems and receive the lamp shade you are expecting.
It doesn’t matter if the shade is made of rawhide or not, there are different tips you should know about to correctly measure and order a shade and also the proper description that will help you insure that the person receiving your order is understanding you. We understand custom rawhide lamp shades for rustic western Lamps and southwest home accessories. Because we deal with this this situation quite often we have some tips that anyone can use to insure the correct look for a lamp, even without seeing the lamp and shade and lamp together.
The proper way to measure:
1. You will need to have three key measurements, the bottom diameter, top diameter and height. The bottom diameter is the measurement across the bottom of the lamp shade. The top diameter is always measured across the top of the lamp shade. The height of a lamp shade must be measured straight up and down vertically, never up the slant.
This is where the problem usually starts. When relaying the measurements various individuals and companies will place the three dimensions in various order, it’s not standard, so be careful that you are not mixing up the bottom and height measurements for example.
2. The height always has to be measured straight up and down, but some stores will measure along the slant. These two measurements can vary or be quite different and cause the finished shade to be incorrect if confused. Be sure to clarify how the height is measured. It’s worth noting that most people who measure the slant rather than the shade height refer to it as the shade’s length rather than height.
An important Measuring Height Tip:
The reason you must measure height up and down, vertically, is that the height measurement of your lamp from bulb socket base to top of harp is probably the minimum vertical height you will want to cover the electrical parts with the shade.
An important Tip On Height Adjustment:
One good thing about using a stock replacement shade, your lamp’s finished height and look can easily adjusted. The wire harp that holds the shade over the bulb is interchangeable. That will be great news if a standard shade is say an inch to short. In stead of having to order a custom shade you are able to change the harp causing the shade to sit lower on the lamp to give you the proper look.
Shade Mounting Type:
The standard shade mount has a center bar across the top with a hole for the harp mount or a washer held in place by three supports that attach to the top rim of the shade. Both types allow the shade to be secured to the harp. Some small lamps and chandeliers don’t use a harp but instead use a bulb clip to attach directly to the bulb. A bulb clip is simply two wire loops that are attached to the shade’s center bar and grip the bulb.
A bulb clip adapter can be added to any regular shade to allow it to be placed over the bulb. Chandelier lamp shades usually have built-in bulb clips made for the small flame or candelabra style bulbs. Lamp shades used as Hanging Lamps can use an uno mount which has a center ring large enough for the bulb socket to pass through. These also are used on some Table Lamps. You can use a bulb clip on a replacement shade instead of an uno mount.
You find these tips useful on your next rawhide lamp shade or replacement lampshade project and you will be guaranteed to measure, order and receive the right size lamp shade the first time around for fabric or rawhide lamp shades.

30 Business Brainstorming Ideas – Part 3
Sometimes you just get stuck for ideas. Your mind is a blank. It makes it even harder to come up with the goods if your present or future business rests on your ideas. A little help and inspiration for a new article, a new product, or a completely new business wouldn’t go amiss in these circumstances.
The purpose of the ideas in this series of articles is to get your brain thinking. The ideas may seem a bit crazy and unrealistic – almost too simple. But…. the intention is for these ideas to act as a trigger, making you say something like: “That idea’s ridiculous, but if I change it around a bit I could…” So, use one or more of these ideas as your starting point and brainstorm your way to a new opportunity.
1. Begin an enterprise which sells garden gates door to door. On your sales trips, take with you a smart folder which has a large photograph of each gate you are selling. Provide potential customers with a price which includes installation. Your target houses should be easy to spot!
2. Start a home based computer bureau. There are hundreds of business computer programs available such as wages, record files and accounts. Buy and use these programs to provide a computer service to local businesses.
3. Set up a business which promotes the making of lampshades. Lampshade making can be sold as either, an interesting new hobby, or a business opportunity. Produce a mail order catalogue of lampshade making equipment and supplies. Advertise your catalogue in craft magazines.
4. Begin a computerised dating service. Operate this service like a traditional dating service, but hold all your records on a computer and use the computer to aid your search for compatible partners. Have leaflets about your service printed and place them at shops in your area.

Paris / Limoges Table Lamps
The production of porcelain was established at Limoges in 1771 under the patronage of the Comte de Artois, brother of Louis XVI.
Limoges was chosen as the ideal centre for porcelain production as it uniquely had available all the required ingredients for the production of hard paste porcelain, very similar to Chinese porcelain.
As early as 1768 these ingredients began to be quarried with production underway in 1771. The white porcelain produced was of such high quality that the King had planned to establish a connection with Limoges and Sevres by sending the white Limoges porcelain, or, blanks, to the Sevres factory near Paris to be decorated in the enamelling workshops.
At this time, Sevres was the undisputable leading light of porcelain and its decoration throughout Europe with a range of sublime colours that have never been surpassed. These plans, established at Versailles, were never undertaken due to the outbreak of the “Terror“, the French revolution which saw the end of much of France’s artistic predominance.
Limoges continued to produce porcelain with the establishment of many private factories and in the 19th century was known as the French “Staffordshire“.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Limoges developed to become the major centre for the production of porcelain in France, porcelain being fired, then sent on to Paris for decoration at one of the many decorating establishments. These establishments ranging from small, one person studios to substantial workshops. Fine production of porcelain at Limoges still continues today.

The porcelain produced at Limoges and, as was the practice, sent to Paris to be decorated. The lamps enamelled with a pale pink ground known as “angel skin” or “blush”.
The lamps with oval shaped reserves in a rich burgundy ground, painted with classical Roman busts en grisaille, a painters’ technique by which an image is painted in shades of grey, giving the image a modelled appearance, creating the illusion of sculpture. The lamp bases and caps of turned, gold plated bronze.
