Decorating Your Home With Art Deco Design

There are many style options you can choose from to decorate your home in today’s day and age, even options that one would never have considered back in the 20th century or even in the past few decades. This includes one style from the 20th century that seems to be regaining some popularity recently, and that style is art deco.

Back in the 1920s to 1930s, art deco design was very popular. In that time period, art deco was considered to be functional, elegant, and ultra modern. Art deco designers would often reject the traditional ideas and materials of decoration and interior design, instead opting to use more unusual materials such as ebony, marble, stainless steel, lacquer, aluminum, inlaid wood, sharkskin, and zebra skin.

The use of harder, metallic materials to construct the furniture used in art deco design were to reflect the celebration of the machine age. Sometimes, art deco designers would alter the furniture they had to give it more of a look that fit the art deco interior design. This is why the process of Lacquering (or giving the furniture a glossy finish) was created.

In addition, art deco designers liked to emphasize clean lines and geometric shapes. Strong, sharp angles were often added to the layout of the room to emphasize the art deco interior design.

If you are considering turning your living room or bedroom into a room that accentuates the art deco design, here are some ideas and tips to consider.

Realize that there is often a pyramidal effect on the rooms that use the art deco design, thanks to the Aztec and Egyptian elements that influence art deco.

Giving your room a gradual lessening of form can present a perception of strength and endurance to those who experience your room. That is why this type of interior design was very popular back during the days of the Great Depression, as people tried to display their financial strength and stability in that dark economic period.

There are other ways to emphasize the art deco interior design in your room.

One way is to add more furniture pieces and accessories that have black and green tones to your room, as black and green are primary colors in art deco design.

Adding intriguing and unusual accessories, such as distinctive artwork, is another way to add to the art deco flavor of your room.

Another way is to have wall-to-wall carpet that coordinates well with the art deco design of your room. This would include having neutral color carpet to help soften up the intensity of the art deco interior design.

You should also pay attention to the lighting in your room, as it should match up well with art deco decorating. Lamps with geometric glass shades often work best with art deco interior design.

In addition to artificial lighting, you should also consider the natural lighting from your windows and the window treatments. With art deco design, going with ordinary-looking drapes may be your best option, though if you want to have people focus on your window style, you could consider using vintage drapes instead.

Decorating your home with art deco design involves using materials that are different from traditional materials, such as ebony, marble, stainless steel, sharkskin, and zebra skin. Lacquering is also a key component in art deco design. Art deco also emphasizes clean lines and geometric shapes, especially strong, sharp angles. Art deco design continues to make a comeback after being very popular in the 1920s and 1930s; if you want an ultra modern, functional, yet elegant design, art deco would likely be your best interior design option.

Lamps for Interior Design – Shelley Porcelain

Shelley, is one of those names that most people with an interest in antiques and design find familiar.  Shelley is probably most famous for its productions of the period from 1910 – 1940.  This, of course, includes the exuberant period of design known as  “Art Deco”, however, we need to go back to 1862 to find the origins of this famous name.

Shelley Potteries started life as the Foley China Works at Fenton, Staffordshire, when Joseph Shelley became a partner in the firm.  Joseph Shelley progressed through the company and by 1910, the name “Shelley China” was being actively promoted, with the company name finally changing to Shelley in 1925.

Shelley continued in production until 1966 when it was taken over by Allied English Potteries, now part of The Doulton Group.  The Shelley Art Deco styles are considered about as high style as Art Deco period porcelain can be!

The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co have recently acquired a very rare, matched pair of English, Shelley Porcelain Lamps perfectly suited to the Art Deco interior design enthusiast, the lamps with an all-over “Burnt Orange” ground colour, so typical of this vibrant period of design.

With an overall height, including lampshades, of 25” / 64cm, these lamps show strong Japanese design influence with the orange ground decorated with elegantly drawn subjects of cranes in flight, the birds enameled in lustre green and black.  The lamps standing on bronze, custom made, square, stepped bases, enamelled in gloss black.

These are an outstanding pair of difficult to find, Shelley, Art Deco Lamps.  Circa 1925.

Please remember that The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co ship lamps, ready wired for the U.S, the U.K and Australia.  You are invited to visit The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co’s web site at -

Beautiful Art Deco Table Lamps

Art Deco is a decorating style which was very popular in the early to mid part of the twentieth century, most notably so between 1925 to around the beginning of the second world war in 1939.

The style originated in America and became symbolic of the incredible growth and evolution which was occurring throughout affluent America becoming a growing sensation and global influence. Art Deco celebrated everything about the modern world. Automobiles and new technology. Expansion in all areas, industrialization, growth and wealth. It was and is a style that is not afraid to make bold statements and appear monumental. Its style is very distinctive and recognisable. Most people will have come in contact with the decorating style from cinema and movies from and about that exiting period of time.

It used expensive materials such as gold, marble and brass to show off the wealth and pride of a new strong America. Made famous by metropolis New York and stylish laid back Miami in its time, it has continued to evolve over the years and is still a popular decorating style for all who want to add some stylish elements to their interior decorating.

Art Deco is a style that is easy to implement into your home. Firstly, compared to other significant styles, there are no strict rules or guidelines to what belongs and what does not. Furthermore Art Deco has inspired many later designers, so there is ample opportunity to find newer furniture designs which will fit in well with the style, without costing you as much as antiques.

The goal to aim for is, that stylish, sleek 1930′s Hollywood ambiance, have a look at some films from that time for inspiration or newer re-enactments. Don’t be afraid to borrow from other ancient periods, such as Egyptian icons and statuettes. In fact these were very popular in the time.

The main colour palette used can either be the black, velvet, red and gold New York style, or the lighter and more upbeat Miami style with pastel colours.

Furniture should be covered with velvet furnishing and muted reddish colours. Other than that go for simple lines and looks.

Unique amps are a characteristic part of the style and is one of the easiest ways to implement Art Deco in your home without going overboard. Lamps from this period are recognisable by being very creatively designed and different in style from other periods of interior design.

Some common denominators are brass or metal footing, or sometimes dark wood with shiny finishing. Look for polished and stylish metal finishes. Art Deco lamps come in many different designs and lamp shades are often imaginatively inspired from sea shells to huge domes or globes. In fact there are so many different models that it would be impossible to list here!

Art Deco lamps are widely available as floor, wall and table lamps. Reproductions are affordable, with genuine Art Deco lamps made by the designers of the time command the usual higher price! Keep your eyes peeled at boot fairs and in junk shops there are some wonderful Art Deco pieces to be found!

Art Deco Designs Set for a Bold Comeback

Art Deco designs permeated nearly everything in the 20′s and 30′s. Their purpose was solely decorative. They were included in architecture, jewellery, pottery, silverware, and furniture, and were instantly adopted by movie makers. Considering the film industry’s powerful influence on the public, movies may have been where art deco had the greatest pull. People typically associated the art deco style with the high contrast lighting used in the production of ‘film noir’. Over time, the two art forms became almost synonymous.

The art deco style is a mixture of several movements: Modernism, Art Nouveau, Futurism, Constructivism, Cubism and Neoclassical. It is a combination of color and shape – eye-catching geometry offset by swirls and curves.

Is Art Deco Ancient History?

Some say that the art deco movement began at the international exposition of modern industrial and decorative arts show in Paris in 1925, while others believe that it was already happening around 1910. Of even greater interest is that a number of art historians argue that King Tutan Khamun’s tomb displays art deco designs. King Tut was truly ahead of his time.

Art Deco and Interior Design

As the popularity of art deco designs grew, architects began to incorporate them into their work. We can appreciate the strong influence of this style in structures such as the Golden Gate Bridge. With train stations, skyscrapers and building facades demonstrating art deco designs, it was only a matter of time before art deco made its way into the interior of homes.

Art Deco interior decorating was a combination of polished wood, colorful glass and lustrous plastic. The goal was to create a sleek, glamorous effect. People who had suffered hard years of deprivation during the great depression were looking to indulge themselves in an atmosphere of dazzling luxury. Bold colors in a room were meant to produce a high contrast with the surroundings. Metallic paint was often used to add a shiny finish to one of the walls, and sometimes a different color was chosen for each wall, with the ceilings painted black.

Art Deco carried many motifs in the form of erotic nudes, artistic representations of animals, and imaginative interpretations of cars, cruise liners and skyscrapers. Photo-realism was not the idea of the day.

Art Deco Portraiture

The art deco era produced influential portraiture by avant-garde artists such as Tamara De Lempicka, who became famous for her unique style. Tamara’s piece “Portrait of a Young Girl in a Green Dress” shows high color contrast. The young woman wearing white gloves holds onto the black brim of her hat, which covers wisps of blond hair. She has bright red lips. Sharpness was created with the use of black lines delineating shape and color.

Edward Lucie-Smith, art critic and historian, expressed his view on art deco portraiture with this comment: “It can be argued that the Art Deco spirit expressed itself more naturally through portraiture than through any other kind of painting. The quintessential Art Deco portraitist is undoubtedly Tamara de Lempicka. Fashionable society of the 1920s and 30s is now perceived very largely through her eyes”

According to many, Paris was the core of Art Deco due to the artistic creations of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Jean-Jacques Rateau, Edgar Brandt, Jean Dunand, René Lalique, Maurice Marinot, and Cartier.

Today’s Art Deco House

An Art Deco style home has tall and thin windows. Shiny, ornamental pieces of colored glass, chrome, ivory and jade are plentiful in the living room. A print of one of Lempicka’s art deco portraits in the hallway would add a nostalgic touch. Lighting, produced by decorative Table Lamps featuring art deco designs of animals or female figures, is typically attractive. Kitchens and bathrooms have highly-polished black and white checkerboard patterns or abstract tile designs. The carpets are bold in colour and show a geometric pattern. Dressers and wardrobes are simple in shape and of pale veneer wood in order to offset the vibrant colors of the bedroom’s walls. As a whole, an art deco style home produces an atmosphere of affluence and undeniable nostalgia.

Art Deco Furniture

One of the leading names in art deco furniture is Eileen Gray, a pioneer in the field of innovative home furnishings. Her most famous pieces include the Pirouge daybed, a boat-shaped fantasy bed, the Blocs screen with panels that swivel, and the Bidendum, a contoured leather chair on metal tubular legs. These opulent pieces have lots of curves and display prominent color against a shiny structure.

Are art deco designs here to stay? Their strong comeback in stores and their obvious popularity among many homeowners are promising signs of permanence.

Art Deco at Home

The Art deco style celebrated the advent of the modern age like no other expression of design. It rejoiced the birth of the automobile, the plane and the movie star with its streamlined designs. It used marble, gold and brass and was not afraid to be gaudy or monumental. Though an obvious symbol of national pride in America, the Art Deco style wasn’t above taking influence from other cultures and ethnic motifs and almost Egyptian murals were easily adapted. Made universally famous by cities such as New York and Miami, Art Deco has continued to evolve since its introduction over eighty years ago. Today it is more popular than ever amongst those who wish to introduce a little nostalgia and pizzazz into their homes whilst retaining a sophisticated air.

Choosing an Art Deco theme as the basis of a new look for your home actually makes life a little easier than if you had chosen a style from any other iconic period. This is because of two things, firstly, the Art Deco look has a tendency to be a little eclectic meaning you don’t have to worry about sticking to any make or break guidelines. Secondly, a huge amount of furniture on sale today is actually based on the principles of Art Deco. The main principles to adhere to are the inclusion of geometric patterns and smooth clean edges. Art Deco was all about celebrating the birth of a new modern age so the goal should be to achieve quite a sleek ambience. Furniture should be covered in piped velvet ideally in muted tones of red or plum to evoke a feeling of 1930′s Hollywood, red carpet glamour.

In terms of a general colour scheme choose either a typically New York palette of burgundy, black, white or gold or opt for the more playful Miami approach and choose aqua blue, pastel pink, orange or yellow. It is best not to mix the two colour schemes as this will result in an unconvincing finish- in order to pull off the Art Deco look convincingly you must show conviction. Generally, the living room, bedrooms and studies are suited to the rich and classy tones of the New York style whereas the fresh and vibrant colours of Miami work very well in the kitchen, bathroom and patio areas.

Really crank up the drama stakes when dressing window areas. Include thick draped curtains and tie them back into a seductive arch with some beaded or tasselled tie-backs.

As I said earlier don’t be afraid to introduce anything new you might find on your travels such as an exotic lamp or Persian rug. Such objects easily conform to Art Deco ideals in the way they use pattern and create drama.

Overall Art Deco was about embracing the new, therefore it is a style that appreciates and indeed flatters contemporary style and also one which will grow with you and learn to adapt to your tastes as they develop and change. Your Art Deco home will not need dramatic over-halls every few years, it will bend and bow and invite new ideas and fresh perspective. It is very much a home for life.
