The Mascot Of All Mascots

One of the most frightening animals on the planet is the tiger. These beasts are massive in size and they are very beautiful also. Many may wonder what the habitat of a tiger is like. Tigers can live in many different climates. However, they usually are hidden deep in the jungles of India. Their world is filled foliage that helps with shelter from oppressive heat. Tigers also have a thirst that is hard to quench, but the lush jungles offer a good supply of water to keep a tiger hydrated. The habitat also offers food and a great area to stalk that prey. The habitat of the tiger is often being taken away by humans who are looking to invade and take the land for themselves. Since India is one of the world’s largest populated areas, the tiger’s habitat is more and more in danger everyday.

Since the tigers are endangered, conservation of these big cats is essential to keeping them on the planet. One of the main reasons that tigers are hunted by people is for their fur. They are also losing their habitat and this is causing their numbers to decrease rapidly. However, the humans of the world are becoming more and more aware of the tiger and their world. Keeping them safe has become a huge agenda for many people. However, a tiger is associated with strength and intimidation as well as it should be. This is also a very popular animal that is used as a mascot to represent schools and even companies all over the world. Again, it is chosen because of its representation of strength and pride. Understanding why these mascots were chosen can better help with the meaning behind the tiger mascot existence.

One of the most famous tigers in history is the Exxon tiger. He began showing up in the early 1950′s. The reason for the tiger mascot was simple. The gas market was very competitive at that time, and the tiger could show that Exxon was a leader in the field of petroleum. He was promoted as being a cartoon character, but he still was made to be powerful in his demeanor and stature. However in the 1970′s the Exxon tiger got a facelift and became a real tiger instead of a cartoon character. This happened because the gas problem forced the world to realize that conservation was at a forefront and it deserved to be looked at in a real light instead of a whimsical aspect.

Another famous tiger mascot is the LSU tiger. He has a unique history that is associated with the Civil War. Mike, the actual name of the tiger, began when the troops of Louisiana were fighting for Robert E. Lee. All of the troops were called tigers and this originated from the famous Washington Artillery of New Orleans. Their mascot was the snarling tiger, and the tradition kept on with the Lee ranks in this great state. Today, Mike is known around the world, and he even has his own habitat built for him across from tiger stadium in Baton Rouge. He is widely known around the nation and it is said that he is the greatest of all the collegiate mascots.

Because we love our mascots, we want to own a little piece of them. That is why sports teams, companies, and other industries that use the tiger as their mascot make trinkets for us to keep in our homes. In today’s retail market you can find mouse pads, Lamps, wallpaper, and even figurines that display the love of the tiger and all that it stands for in the arena of sports and industry. If you want to get close to a tiger, then you may be out of luck.

Night Photography, the Urban Extravaganza

It’s no secret that cities create a huge amount of light at night. Urban dwellers make more use of their window shades to get to sleep than anything else, and from the country the road to the nearest metropolis is often identified by the distant glow of streetlights diffusing high into the atmosphere. I don’t approve of light pollution, as a starry sky on a clear night is one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see, but all of this excess light can definitely be put to good use. Whether it’s “burning” landscape pictures or satellite imagery of bright city outlines, photography is perhaps the only positive outcome of poor light management.

Night photography differs from the popular counterpart in a few major ways. The lack of a single prime light source means photos will often have less contrast and shadow quality, but this is made up for in light diversity. One photo taken in a city may draw light from incandescent street Lamps, fluorescent office lights, and sunlight reflected off a full moon. This creates a situation that’s near impossible to white balance for, and one shouldn’t try to, as the glory of night photography is in the uncontrollable variables. With longer exposures, camera sensors extract and amplify light from wherever available, often with fantastic and unexpected results. A changing stoplight or passing car can drastically alter an image, fog or overcast clouds can diffuse and reflect wayward city lights with incredible beauty, and a lack of consistent shadow often gives structures and objects a surreal existence. Tally in the array of colors from non white-balanced light sources and the camera becomes a kaleidoscope. All in all, night photography is an incredible way to convert some of that extra city light into photos that are, more often than not, a pleasant surprise.

Anyone interested can see some of my night and panoramic photography on my website linked. I’ve been shooting in and around Richmond, VA for a number of years now without even denting its generous supply of photo ops.

That First Impression: Decorating The Lobby Of Your Office (Or Home Office!)

Decorating the Lobby Or Entrance Area / Greeting Area Of Your Office

First impressions say a lot. A first impression can make your office seem younger, fresher, more professional, or conservative. The first thing that people see when they walk through the door will help them to make up their minds about who you are and how well you do what you do. Therefore, if you feel like you don’t want to invest in office furniture for your employees, such as desks, chairs, and computers, make sure to invest well in your reception area. If you have to budget, try to make your price cuts in the back of the office and not the front.

There are many places that sell a variety of furniture, from fun to distinguished, but your best chance is to find something online. Unless you live in a very populated city, it will be hard to find a retailer that can suit your needs. So, where do you start? Alibaba.com is sort of like EBay, but without the bidding. The company is an exporter of goods in different countries around the world. They have products in every category, but as far office furniture, you may be able to find a hard-to-get-item at a lower price. Another company, based in the UK, is Somercort. They carry everything from fast food counters to office accessories. They do provide free delivery and installation if you live within the UK, but if you don’t, you can still order hard to find items from this company and they will help you to locate what you need.

If you are looking for a more modern spin on your reception station, there are so many revolutionary designs out there. Spacify.com specializes in modern contemporary furniture with sleek, clean lines. They have more retro furniture including a computer workstation that looks like a flower from an aerial view with glass and wood combined. The company will offer free shipping, and they have a catalog that is downloadable with Adobe Acrobat software. Another choice is modernoffice.stores.yahoo.net. They have many different reception desks that range in prices from $1200 to $4000. They also carry sofas, recliners, and tables for waiting areas, so you can one stop shop with this store. They do have a catalog, and you can join their mailing list if you are not ready to make a commitment right away.

When you get done with buying your reception desk, you might want to think about your waiting area. Most people choose sofas, chairs, and coffee tables. The more comfortable that your waiting area is, the less likely people will become irritated with waiting. There are several places that can offer your place of business with comfortable and style. For sofas, most people will go with a nice leather sofa. The wear seems to be more minimal than a cloth sofa, and even though we are talking about adults, there will be the occasional spill of coffee, tea, etc. If you are looking for an overstuffed sofa, which will be more comfortable than a standard sofa, try Overstock.com. Overstock has very low shipping rates, for instance this sofa has a shipping price of $2.95. Their overstuffed, leather sofa only comes in brown and costs $2,399, which is the lowered price from the original $4,399, allowing you to save 45%. The sofa is a low inventory item and will sell out periodically, so make sure that you have a back-up sofa in mind. Overstock also has a feature, which will allow a salesperson to assist you with your shopping needs online. If you don’t want your guests to get too comfortable, you may want to pass up comfort for sophistication. High Point makes a sofa (product # 53544) by the Chesterfield Collection that is literally all business (it is even called the Leather Reception Sofa). The sofa is $2,295 and comes in a variety of colors including Mahogany, Midnight, Blackberry, and Black. Make sure that you check the colors before you order because they may not match with their name. For example, one might assume that blackberry is black when, in fact, it is a deep shade of red. The High Point Sofa, along with other executive choices can be found at Nationalbusinessfurniture.com. If you are craving a more retro, contemporary choice to take over your office dÈcor, don’t worry; this style is becoming more and more popular. You cannot beat Scandinavian furniture when you want modern. There are many Scandinavian furniture retail outlets nationwide, but if you still want to browse online, try visiting Scandinaviandesigncenter.com. This site has great sofas, like the Kennedy sofa for $3,517.65, and it comes in black, grey, pink, orange, and aubergine. Another piece that screams style is the BD: 5 Easy Chair, which is by designer Bjorn Dahlstrom, and it comes in fabric or black leather for $2,375. Office furniture can be very expensive, but you should decide how you want to allocate your company’s funds before you blow all of your money on a reception desk or a sofa.

The next thing that you need to decide for your reception area is what type of tables you are going to buy. The trick with office coffee tables is that you want them to look expensive without having to spend a lot of money. People are going to literally beat up the wooden furniture in your lobby, so don’t waste time spending excessive amounts because you are going to have to replace the tables more often than you do any other piece of furniture. Office Liquidators is a company out of Boulder, Colorado that sells new and used furniture. You can look at their showroom online, or you can call in an order that you want. Another obvious choice is to shop at Home Depot or Staples to get a laminate or stained Table. You can always put accessories on the tables such as Lamps, magazines, brochures, or vases, and no one will notice whether the table is real oak or cherry. Most people try to keep themselves busy while waiting to be seen. Another retailer that offers discounted furniture is abcoffice.com. They actually have a specific category that is set aside for lobby seating and tables. They are worth checking out, but again, remember that you get what you pay for. If you have your heart set on spending a lot of money, or if you have to because the rest of the furniture looks so expensive, try a furniture store. Even though furniture stores cater to the home environment, they do have nice, solid furniture that often times comes with warranties and discounts. However, you should take into account the size of your business because ordering in bulk from a furniture store will get costly very fast. If you need a modern look to go with all of the mod, retro furniture in your lobby, you have to try spacify.com. Granted, spacify can be expensive, but if you want to try them, a coffee table or an end table would be a good thing to try from their company without having to pay a lot.

Obviously, everyone is on the quest to find the best accent pieces for their business. You can try places that are generic like Pier 1, Target, or Pottery Barn. However, be careful with the artwork. If you are a collector, and a true admirer of art, then you can appreciate a good selection of artwork. Artprintcollecton.com is a perfect site if you want your artwork to appear more like an authentic piece of work because their prints are framed canvases. They will not come with a glass or acrylic finish, and they have themes such as photography, floral, humor, and nautical. If you want a poster imitation try the website allposters.com, and choose from over 50,000 selections. Remember that when you frame a print, you should have it matted, which will give the appearance of a real painting and not just a print. Make sure that you bring the matte in as close as you can to the actual picture.

If you have ever been a customer, of any kind, you know what kind of impression a lobby area can make. It is the equivalent to going to a bathroom in a restaurant and comparing it to how clean the place is. Generally, people will be in a better mood the more comfortable that they are. It is hard for people to escape their human nature and judge what they see. Make sure to remember that where you greet, stick, and hold people says a lot about your workplace and what you can offer as a company, whether you like it or not.

Do You Need To Light Up Your Garden At Night?

Outdoor lighting provides several advantages, which can be narrowed down into two, namely, security, and adding beauty to outdoor surroundings. In installing the outdoor light system, its actual design is characterized by the site conditions, the landscape effect and your standards.

In planning the exterior lights, choose the type of outdoor light system that you will install. There are five types to choose from. You can choose up-lights for ground level illumination as the lights are pointed up. It is best for landscape lighting and to highlight features, such as trees and architectural designs. Up-light fixtures can be spot light or flood light.

You can also choose backlights for your outdoor lighting, and create a dramatic effect. The problem with this type of lighting system is when it is overly designed it can look like Halloween lighting. Its basic concept is to place Outdoor Lighting Fixtures behind an object like small plant or statue.

You can also choose path lights which can serve as your guide on a path or driveway. It is best as decorative lighting while providing security on the pathway. Its location should be above the ground to scatter its illumination with gentle glowing effect. Make sure you don’t over light the area to make it look like an airport runway.

The Down-lights are best for spotlight and floodlights. They illuminate an entry like the rear door, an entrance to a gazebo or bordered garden. In contrast to path light, a down light should not be visible to achieve natural lighting. The goal of this type of outdoor lighting is to create a magical and inviting mood to the location such as rock or fountain garden.

When you have chosen your lighting system, it is time to measure its wattage. This can be done by getting the sum of the wattage of all outdoor lighting fixtures that you will use. Choose the transformers that are compatible to the total wattage. Ensure that the wattage capacity of your transformers is more than the total wattage used.

Determine the length of cable that you need based on the location of your outdoor lighting. If your system is less than 200 watts, use a 14-gauge cable. If it more than 200 watts, use 12-gauge.

Decide the control options for your lights. You can choose timers, lights controlled by the amount of natural lights or a simple on and off switch.

Install the transformer one foot off the ground. Run the cable to the transformer, stripping half an inch of insulation from its end with a knife or stripping tool. Connect the stripped wires based on the instructions on the transformer.

Prepare your outdoor lighting fixtures and its corresponding cable. Ensure that there is a small loop of slack cable at each fixture for its attachment. Cover your outdoor lighting cable with decorative stones or hide it under foliage. You can also bury the cable with its loop kept above the ground.

Connect the cable to the fixtures by slipping the connector halves over the cable loop. If the transformer has been connected, this should make the fixture to light up. If not remove the connectors and try again. Continue to install the remaining fixtures for your outdoor lighting.

Modern Ceiling Lights To Brighten Up Your Home

Modern home lighting is an important part of home decor which can be overlooked. You need to have the right kind of lights for the interior of your home to make the most of your space. The right lights can make the world of difference.

You can look for modern indoor lighting supplies at various electronic online stores or can order the lights from electronic manufacturers. If you look on the internet, you can find a wide range of home lighting options. You can even have an idea about the prices for installing a particular kind of indoor lighting.

Different home lighting options for different rooms

Not all rooms need the same type of lighting options. Your bedroom, living room, study, kitchen, and bathrooms all require different types of lighting. It is important to understand this before you start looking for ideal home lighting options.

- You could start with the living room; the most crucial part of your home. It is advisable that you opt for general lighting in the living room. The living room usually has a large space, so you can have general lighting from one or more ceiling fixtures. You can also choose to have many indirect lighting fixtures. In the living room, you can also use decorative wall lights to enhance the beauty of paintings, photo frames and the fireplace.

- For the bedroom you can have a general lighting fixture; this will illuminate the whole bedroom. You may need to have specific task lighting to cater to the dressing Table area. Having ornamental lampshades, reading lights or Bedside Light fixtures is also very essential. Install wall or ceiling lights wherever you can in your bedroom.

- The kitchen requires enough lighting for the purpose of cooking meals. Proper lighting ensures that you are able to cook safely. Poor lighting is not a good idea in this area. It is advisable that you have a large ceiling fixture coupled with energy-efficient fluorescent tubes which will provide enough light. A good idea is to have strip lights under the cabinets; this will illuminate the countertops and the work areas.

- For the bathrooms in your house, you need good amount of lighting. There are specific lighting needs of the bathroom. Have proper lights installed at the sides of the bathroom mirror. There can also be task lighting in the bathroom for reading, near the wash basin, or near the toilet paper dispenser. A recessed light could be installed above the shower or the bathtub.

General lighting with task lighting in different parts of your home should serve the purpose of perfect indoor lighting. General indoor lighting options are not enough to highlight every corner of your home. If you have good furnishings and lots of showpieces to display in your house, flaunt them all with proper indoor lighting. A well illuminated home is a picture of mirth, warmth, and cheer.

It is earth’s eye; looking into, which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature… The lakes are something which you are unprepared for; they lie up so high, exposed to the light, and the forest is diminished to a fine fringe on their edges, with here and there a blue mountain, like amethyst jewels set around some jewel of the first water — so anterior, so superior, to all the changes that are to take place on their shores, even now civil and refined, and fair as they can ever be.”

Whereupon Muhammad is said to have announced, “An eclipse is a phenomenon of nature. It is foolish to attribute such things to the death or birth of a human being.” At Muhammad’s own death an attempt was made to deify him, but the man who was to become his administrative successor killed the hysteria with one of the noblest speeches in religious history: “If there are any among you who worshipped Muhammad, he is dead. Although one might conclude that the world is separate from his energy, thinking that his energy is the separate formal cause of the objective world. It is not. And i think it’s an ongoing struggle for everybody Nobody is completely balanced, completely happy or completely sad. think it’s really a struggle every day to be as complete a human being as you can. And isn’t that the beauty of life? To me, menial health and mental peace are more important than physical fitness. If you accept yourself and feel good about it, you will remain fit. Whether you are fat or thin, short or tall, dark or fair-skinned — at the end of the day it does not really matter as long as you like yourself, accept yourself. What matters is how you are on the inside. At the core we are all energy This energy is beyond definitions. It is intangible and cannot be described. From involvement springs attachment, and from attachment arises bondage. That is how the being of man is roped into bondage by the action of the ego in attaching itself to the objects of life with proprietorship claims. The release can come only when with the dawn of knowledge man realizes that he has no real claim on anything in the world, and that his natural stat is one for freedom from all involvement. As i travelled through the length and breadth of my country, on foot or by cycle, carrying my meagre provisions and possessions in my backpack, as a young lad of 14 or 15, i was constantly in communioni with nature. It was an intensely joyous experience to wake up to birdsong and sleep under open skies during my travels. Realising that the magnificent vistas of mountain peaks and desert tracks would blur ultimately and would be no longer as clearly focused as i grew older, i filled sketch books and rough pages with innumerable strokeful landscapes. I still have a few to remind me of that time when our young hearts were bursting with pulsating excitement that energized our art with a life of its own… I find a wealth of wisdom in the scriptures. Alabaster Table Lamps

The White Room…inspiration From The Foot Of Snow Outside My Window!

I thought that I would write about designing a white on white room today. Many thoughts run through my head of personal experiences that once made me feel frustrated. After all, white is white isn’t it? How hard can it be? I had a client who requested a meeting with me to decipher between here shades of paint for her new room. They were called alabaster, white blush and feathered violet…all of which looked like white, white or white from a distance. They were all the lightest hues on the color spectrum that took them into the tonal colors of perhaps grey, red, and purple. And IT DID MATTER.

It also mattered when a friend walked into our living room and insulted me by suggesting that I lacked design talent because of the enormous use of white in my own living room! What did he know anyway?

Many people in the past have referred to white as the “absence of color”. It is important to know that white comes in a wide range of shades and tones. The idea of an all white room may sound like a very boring attempt. On the contrary. If it is done correctly, it is a major accomplishment and produces a gorgeous room!

Here are some examples of what can be done with various shades and textures of white. The most important trick in using a lot of white is to find tonal compliments like I stated above…finding the ROOT color in your white selection. Does the paint selection have grey undertones? Then perhaps you should choose something with pink undertones for the sofa. Perhaps the coffee Table has a high liquor finish to add a texture contrast, then maybe the chairs are done in a white mohair. The window treatments could be done in a buttery white silk and the lamp shades in cream or ivory. The rug selection could be a cool white woven wool…etc.

It is all about layering and not being afraid of too little or too much. It will be important to stay within a range of whites, selecting four to five “colors” and then adding a variety of emphasis in the play on texture to complete the room. Remember that white is a color and that it can be season-less, despite what may be falling outside your window tonight!

Consider this book, which may further help you.

What are your thoughts on using white in a room?  What are your favorite colors to work with?

Table Lamp With Glass Shade

Tying 2 Unmatching Vintage Pieces Together?

I am a horrible decorator. HELP!

Awhile back, I bought a pair of vintage Table Lamps. They have a brass stand and a big red glass ball for the base. Then I received a vintage sectional (made in ’59) that has a light blue with green tweed fabric covering. I really love both and want to find a way to coordinate together.

I’m still planning on getting shades for the lamps, possibly a large area rug and I just got a little coffee table I’m going to paint. Maybe one of these items could be used to tie the lamps and sofa together? Any suggestions?

I have found that red is an awesome color to do detail work in. Perhaps you could make your main color scheme the light blue and green… and do small things (like the balls on the lamps) in red. Since red would somewhat clash with blue and green, you don’t want to over-do it on the red. Perhaps get some black and white pictures for on the walls that have a small amount of red, blue, and green in them. For example, my living room is brown, tan and black. I have it “trimmed” in red. Red pillows on my couches, some small red vases sitting around, etc. Just an idea. Red is a very loud color, which I like! :)

Communion service is at all hours, and the bread and wine are from the heart and marrow of Mother Earth. To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter… to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring — these are some of the rewards of the simple life. The most precious things of life are near at hand, without money and without price. Each of you has the whole wealth of the universe at your very door. But it is not; it is in the inmost texture of the substance itself. Polish, choice words, faultless rhetoric, are only the accidents of style. Indeed, perfect workmanship is one thing; style, as the great writers have it, is quite another. It may, and often does, go with faulty workmanship. It is the choice of words in a fresh and vital way, so as to give us a vivid sense of a new spiritual force and personality In the best work the style is found and hidden in the matter.”

JOHN BURROUGHS –“The difference between a precious stone and a common stone is not an essential difference — not a difference of substance — but of arrangement of the particles — the crystallisation. In substance, the charcoal and the diamond are one, but in form and effect, how widely they differ! The pearl contains nothing that is not found in the coarsest oyster-shell. Two men have the same thoughts; they use about the same words in expressing them; yet with one the product is real literature, with the other it is platitude. The difference is all in presentation; a finer and more compendious process has gone on in the one ease than in the other. The elements are better fused and knitted together; they are in some way heightened and intensified. Is not here a clue to what we mean by style?

And most of them are richly clad and clean, And eat such dainty foods and sweets with mirth; Whilst noisy crackers burst, their lights are seen, It seems to be a happy day on Earth!
