Brass Table Lamp has current running through… Is that dangerous?

I went to shut off my old Brass Table Lamp tonight and the metal switch stung when I touched it. I returned and touched the brass arms holding the fixtures and it all stings like there is live electricity running through it (low voltage, of course, but enough to sting me)
Why is that happening and is the lamp dangerous?

The wires running through the lamp have lost part of their insulation. If you like the lamp, it should be rewired before it does more than sting. It’s a fairly simple job.

Does anyone know where I could get a wall mounted Touch Lamp?

Not a cheap one from eBay, I all ready checked there. I need a touch lamp I can mount on the wall for next to the bed.

I just saw an ad in Bed Bath and Beyond about one of those.Check it out.

Switch to Compact Fluorescent Bulbs to Save Money and Energy

The fluorescent bulbs of today are a far cry from those loudly buzzing, sterile white tubes seen in offices and hospitals in the 80′s. Now available in a wide range of styles and “color temperatures,” eco-friendly compact fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are designed for the home and screw into many of the medium socket and candelabra lamps sold on our site. Use them in ceiling fixtures, sconces, chandeliers and other light fixtures.

Very simply put, CFLs generate light when electrons from the bulb’s ballast collide with mercury vapor throughout the bulb’s length, which in turn stimulates a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass. The result is a steady luminescence that is also incredibly energy-efficient, because more energy is spent on producing light (measured in lumens) and less is wasted on producing heat! This is why CFLs stay cooler to the touch than an incandescent bulb, and why a low-watt CFL brightens a room with the same intensity of a high watt incandescent bulb. Incandescent bulbs and their CFL equivalent are as follows:

60 Watts=13-18 Watts CFL

75 Watts=18-22 Watts CFL

100 Watts=23-28 Watts CFL

150 Watts=30-38 Watts CFL

But it gets even better! Because compact fluorescent lamps use about 66% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same amount of light, you can save up to $45 dollars a year when you choose an 18 watt CFL over a 75 watt incandescent bulb. Within the first 500 hours of use, your bulb has made up for it’s initially higher price. What’s more, compact fluorescent bulbs last an average of 10 to 15 times longer than a standard filament bulb, putting an end to chronic bulb replacement and halting the surge of burnt out bulbs entering our landfills. And since CFL’s expend less energy, there is less demand on electric power plants that burn polluting fossil fuels. Amazingly, swapping out ONE incandescent bulb with a CFL will keep half a ton of CO2 out of the air for the CFL’s lifetime! You can make a positive impact on the environment simply by screwing in a CFL.

Once a CFL is spent, it’s legal to throw it in the trash; however, these energy-efficient bulbs do contain trace amounts of mercury vapor. If they are sent to an incinerator, this mercury could enter the atmosphere. Instead, collect your CFLs for your community household hazardous waste collection for treatment and recycling; if a bulb breaks, take care not to inhale the vapor and promptly wipe up pieces with a wet rag. Toss everything, including the rag, into a plastic bag for proper disposal. It’s important to note that the overall benefits of a CFL’s energy-saving operation far outweigh any risk trace amounts of mercury vapor in the bulb may pose to landfills.

Chicago Wedding Lighting

Lighting is often overlooked when discussing wedding decor. This is unfortunate because lighting can have a significant impact on the look and feel of your wedding for a relatively small investment. The proper lighting can transform an ordinary room into a stunning work of art. In addition to transforming the room, different types and colors of lighting can create different atmospheres and moods throughout the course of the evening.

The first step in lighting for a wedding is to turn off any fluorescent lighting in the room; you are at a wedding, not in an office building! After the fluorescents are gone it is time to create your elegant lighting design using gobos, uplights, pin spots and intelligent lighting.

Gobos

The uplights create columns of light going up the wall and bathe the room in a beautiful glow. The uplights are color coordinated with your wedding color scheme to tie everything together. The amount of uplights required depends on the size of the room and the desired effect.

There are two major categories of uplighting fixtures; Conventional par cans and LED. LED uplights are the newest technology and offer several advantages over traditional conventional fixtures.

LED fixtures consume far less power than the old-fashioned par cans. Many times all of the uplights can be run off of a single electrical outlet which is very important in venues with limited power supply. Traditional uplighting fixtures can become hot and pose a risk to small children who like to touch the lights. LED lights remain cool to the touch throughout the entire event. LED lighting is often “intelligent” which means it can be programmed to produce millions of colors from a single unit and can be controlled to vary color, intensity, speed of color fade, etc throughout the course of the night to create different moods. This can create some truly dramatic effects as the walls of your venue change from one color to another as cocktails end and dinner begins and then again when the dancing starts. The downside to LED lighting is that it is often more expensive to rent as the lighting fixtures cost substantially more than traditional ones. Another drawback is that LED fixtures have trouble producing some colors well.

The two biggest factors in determining which type of uplighting is right for you are; which colors are you using and how much power is available at your venue. Contact a lighting expert and give them an idea of what you are looking for and they will be able to tell you which type of lighting would work best for you.

Color Wash

Another popular effect is to use a pattern gobo on the dance floor and wash the dance floor in coordinating color. A wash is a lighting term that means to fill an area with light. Washing your dance floor will make it really stand out and a focal point of the celebration. You may also wash walls, ceilings, entryways or any areas you want to highlight.

Pin Spots

If you have elaborate floral arrangements or centerpieces on the tables, pin spotting is usually a great idea. Pin spotting is where light fixtures are put up throughout the room to provide “mini spotlights” for the centerpieces. Pin spotting is a very dramatic effect and will really accentuate your centerpieces and show them in their full magnificence. Your florist will love it and it makes for great pictures!

Intelligent Lighting

If you are planning for a wild party later on in the evening and want more of a contemporary edge to your wedding you should consider intelligent dance floor lighting.

Ipod Touch Water Damage?

I have an ipod touch, yesterday it was on the kitchen Table and i turned around and knocked a glass of water with my elbow. About half the ipod got water on it and it was in a rubber case which covers the sides but not the bottom. I immediatley picked it up and dried with a towel. The indicator in the headphone jack is red. After I had dired it I turned it off. The screen had no backlight but was still fully functional. I am leaving it under a lamp as it is nighttime.

it is still fully functional? what’s the problem…
I don’t think it’ll have very much damage unless you drop your iPod in the sea/swimming pool/bathtub something like that.. I know this guy, and i don’t know how it worked… but he has a boat.. and when he dropped his cellphone of that boat (it happened occasionally), he’d put the cell phone in ‘salt water’ or something like that..then it would be completely wet… but he said it would dry up perfectly, when regular water would not..

I don’t know if it works.. how it works.. it’s just something i know

your warranty is invalid when your iPod becomes wet… even when you use it in the rain…

Why do my touch sensitive bedroom Lamps turn on when I turn off the landing light?

I have two touch sensitive bedroom lamps (purchased from Argos) which have always worked as you would expect. However, in the last week I have experienced them coming on by themselves when I switch off the landing light. The first time I had gone to bed and left the landing light on (purely because I have kids who are scared of the dark – no other lights were on in the house). After about half an hour I got out of bed and turned the landing light off. When I came back to the bedroom, both lamps were on. The second time, a week later, I was in the same situation but my wife turned off the landing light and I saw one of the two lamps turn on about the same time. Can any one explain why this is? (I want to be able to convince my wife that I do not have a ghost in the house!)

Those type of lights work by sensing a tiny amount of current discharge.

Heard of RCDs Well they work in your house so that if they sense earth leakage say, a tiny amount of current went to earth, it senses that voltage / current loss, and trips out, meaning you have to reset the fuses.
This is to prevent electric shock. DON’T DO IT but, if a person cut through a cable the IDEA is that before you got a shock, the fuse would trip preventing this. Please do not try it, it’s theory.
For some time now we have had ‘touch screens’ mobile phones now have touchscreens, same thing. the lamp senses a minute disturbance in the neutral part and lights up. do it again and it either lights one stage brighter or turns off.
Because this is such a minuscule amount of disturbance to the neutral or earth cabling, and because your lamps are perhaps on this same cabling or ‘ring’ then when you flick the landing light switch its causing this due to a small spark in switch – however, you might want to have an electrician take a look at that switch

Either that or…”Who ya’ gonna’ call ?….Yeah yeah yeah yeah…I ‘aint afraid a’ no lamps”

The Benefits of Using Touch Lamps
