Torchiere Lamps
replacing switch on lamp; what bulb to use?
We have a 300W torchiere halogen lamp and the switch is broken. I found a switch on the internet which is 500W. Can I use a 300W bulb with the 500W switch (i.e. any wattage 500W or less?)? Thanks!
If you have to ask this question, then you aren’t qualified to do your own electrical wiring. Throw the lamp away and buy a new one.
The 500W switch is probably suitable to control a 300W load… however, you didn’t mention the Voltage and Amperage that the switch is rated to – it makes a difference. Additionally, we don’t know the quality or reliability of the switch – it may fail and burn your house down… is it UL listed?
For that matter, halogen Lamps are a HUGE fire hazard in their own right… throw it away and replace it with an incandescent or florescent lamp.
